India: Man gets 7 yrs in jail for raping minor for a week

Dumka (Jharkhand), Jan 18 (PTI) A local court on Friday sentenced a man to seven years rigorous imprisonment for raping a 13-year-old girl for a week in a Dumka district forest in 2015.

The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge-I, Taufiq-ul Hasan sentenced Chunda Hembram alias Manoj Hembram to seven years rigorous imprisonment under the Pocso Act.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs 1000 on Hembram and noted that upon failing to pay, the convict will have to serve three more months in prison.

India: Girl raped in Hazaribagh forest

Hazaribagh (Jharkhand), Jan 13 (PTI) A girl has been raped by a person in a Hazaribagh forest, police said Sunday.

Seeing a girl alone in Hazaribagh on Friday, the person forcibly huddled her into his SUV, took her to a forest in Tati-Jharia area on Hazaribagh-Bagodar road (NH-100) and raped her, they said.

The girl, who came to Hazaribagh from Raj Dhanwar in neighbouring Giridih district to purchase medicine, was waiting for a bus to return home when the incident happened, police said.

Wanted Naxal terrorist killed in J'khand

Dumka (Jharkhand), Jan 13 (PTI) A wanted naxalite, carrying a reward of Rs 10 lakh, was killed by security forces in an encounter in Jharkhand's Dumka district on Sunday, police said.

Shahdeo Rai alias Talada was killed in an encounter in the jungles of Shikaripara in Dumka. He was the prime accused in the killing of the then Superintendent of Police, Pakur district, Amarjeet Balihar, in July 2013, Superintendent of Police, Y S Ramesh said.

India: Naxal terrorist arrested from Giridih

Giridih (Jharkhand), Jan 13 (PTI) A Maoist, who came home to observe festival in Chitara village in the district, was arrested on Sunday, police said here.

Yodho Tudu was wanted in the killing of a policeman during an encounter on March 30, 2009 near Merampahari of the district, said Bagodar sub-divisional police officer Binod Mahto.

Indian tribal party offers conditional support to BJP

Jamshedpur, Jan 3 (PTI) The Jharkhand Disom Party (JDP), tribal outfit, on Thursday said it would support the BJP in five tribal-dominated Eastern region states if the Narendra Modi government grant recognition to Sarna dharma of the adivasis before the approaching Lok Sabha polls.

Sarna Dharma is centred around the worship of nature.

The JDP made the decision at a meeting of its central committee leaders, party president Salkhan Murmu, a former MP, said in a statement.

Indian PM urged to recognise Sarna Dharma of tribals

Jamshedpur, Jan 2 (PTI) The Jharkhand Disom Party (JDP), a tribal outfit, Wednesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce recognition of Sarna Dharma of the adivasis as a fundamental right during his visit to Jharkhand and Odisha on Saturday.

Sarna Dharma is centred around the worship of nature.

In a letter to the prime minister, JDP president Salkhan Murmu said the adivasis across the country are neither Hindus nor Christians and they worship only the nature.

India: Two get 20 yrs' jail in minor's rape case

Bokaro (Jharkhand), Dec 19 (PTI) A Bokaro court on Wednesday sentenced two persons to 20 years of imprisonment in the rape case of a 15-year-old girl in this district of Jharkhand last year.

Additional district and sessions judge Ranjit Kumar held Sumonto Choudhary and Gaju Mahto guilty under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The court also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of them. If the convicts fail to deposit the fine, they would have to undergo an additional imprisonment of three months.

India: Teenager gang-raped, five held

Ranchi, Dec 18 (PTI) A teen-aged girl was allegedly abducted and gangraped by a group of youths when she and her friends were returning here after celebrating the birthday of one of them, police said Tuesday.

The incident happened in a forest under Kharsidag police station outpost in Namkum area, around 35 km from Ranchi city on Sunday night, the police Tuesday.

India: Jharkhand govt to provide free mobile phones to 28 lakh

Ranchi, Nov 29 (PTI) Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das Thursday said the government will provide free mobile phones to 28 lakh farmers and a separate electric feeder for them for agriculture purpose.

The mobile phones will be given to the farmers by 2019/2021 with an aim to keep the middle men away and also help farmers to have greater information about the market, he said while speaking at the inaugural function of the two-day Agriculture & Food Summit here.

India: Main accused in journalist killing case arrested

Chatra (Jharkhand), Nov 29 (PTI) The main accused in the killing of a journalist of a Hindi daily last month was arrested from Palamau district, police said Thursday.

The accused was identified as Prasant Ji, the Area Commander of an ultra outfit Trutiya Prastuti Committee (TPC), police said.

The arrest was made in a joint raid conducted by the Chatra and Palamau district police on Wednesday, Superintendent of Police, Akhilesh B Beriar said.
