History Created As 945 Candidates Vie For Parliamentary Seats In Malaysian Election

PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), Nov 5  (NNN-Bernama) —  A new chapter was written in Malaysia’s history books when 945 candidates from various parties submitted their nomination papers, the highest in the election history, to contest the 222 parliamentary seats in the 15th General Election (GE15).

Based on the data displayed at the Media Centre of the Election Commission (EC) headquarters here, a total of 441 candidates will also contest for the 117 state seats in the GE15.

Malaysia’s Central Bank Lifts Overnight Policy Rate By 25 Basis Points To 2.75 Pct As Expected

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 (NNN-Bernama) — Central bank of Malaysia has raised the overnight policy rate (OPR) by 25 basis points (bps) to 2.75 per cent, the fourth consecutive hike since May this year as the central bank’s monetary policy committee (MPC) decided to further adjust the degree of monetary accommodation.

In wrapping up its last meeting of the year, the central bank said the ceiling and floor rates of the corridor of the OPR are correspondingly increased to 3.00 per cent and 2.50 per cent, respectively.

Malaysia Reported 3,296 New COVID-19 Infections, One New Death

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Malaysia recorded 3,296 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight, bringing the total tally to 4,893,733, according to the health ministry.

The new infections were 10 new imported cases and 3,286 local transmissions, data released on the ministry’s website showed.

One new death was reported from the pandemic, taking the death toll to 36,463.

The ministry reported 1,960 new recoveries, bringing the total number of COVID-19 patients cured and discharged to 4,827,215 in the country.

Six Missing In Malaysian Helicopter Accident

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Six people are missing, following a helicopter accident, in Malaysia’s Pahang state, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia, said today.

The helicopter, carrying one pilot and five passengers, was flying from Perak state to Pahang state, when the accident occurred, it said in a statement.

Search and rescue teams have been dispatched and operations to recover the victims are currently underway, it said.

Malaysia to hold general election on Nov. 19

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia will hold the general election on Nov. 19, the country's election commission said on Thursday.

The nomination of candidates will be held on Nov. 5, providing two weeks for official election campaigning, commission chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh told a press conference.

There will be 363,515 election workers who will operate 8,958 voting centers across the country to serve a total of 21,173,638 registered voters, the official said.

Malaysia to sign contract with Turkish defence firm for drone manufacturing

13 October 2022; MEMO: Malaysia has selected Turkish Aerospace Industries to provide three unmanned aircraft, Defence News reports.

According to the report, the Malaysian government has decided to contract with Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), the country's Defence Minister, Hishammuddin Hussein, said in a statement.

The purchase will be funded under the country's five-year spending plan, rather than its defence budget, the Minister added.

Malaysia’s 2021 live births see highest decrease in a decade

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (NNN-Bernama) — The number of live births in Malaysia sees the highest decrease in a decade with 439,744 births recorded in 2021 compared to 471,504 births in 2020, according to Vital Statistics report released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia Thursday.

Chief Statistician Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the Crude Birth Rate (CBR) has declined from 14.5 births in 2020 compared to 13.5 births in 2021 per thousand population.

Pedra Branca: Malaysian gov’t agrees to proceed with legal action at ICJ

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (NNN-Bernama) — The Cabinet has agreed for Malaysia to proceed with legal action at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the dispute involving sovereignty over Pedra Branca, Middle Rocks and South Ledge, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said.

He said the matter was agreed upon after hearing the presentation and proposals by the special task force to review laws relating to sovereignty over the disputed islets on Oct 7.
