Mexico: Nine killed in clash between criminals, police in western Michoacan state

 MEXICO CITY, April 3 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Nine people including a policeman were killed in clashes early Saturday in the western Mexican state of Michoacan, a region that has been hit by violence linked to organized crime.

   “Elements of the Michoacan Police, National Guard, local police and Mexican Army neutralized eight criminal targets,” the local public security office said on Twitter. “A municipal agent lost his life in the line of duty.”

Mexico suspends gasoline subsidy as US drivers cross border for deals

MEXICO CITY, April 3 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Mexico, which has been subsidising gasoline to soften price spikes, said the policy would not apply in the US border region this week, citing shortages as more Americans drive south to fill their tanks.

The suspension of the subsidy from April 2-8 covers cities in the border states of Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, Coahuila, Chihuahua, Sonora and Baja California, including Tijuana, one of the world’s busiest border crossings.

Mexico's president floats proposal for public to pick electoral authorities

MEXICO CITY, March 29 (Reuters) - Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Tuesday he will send a proposal to Congress in April aimed at letting citizens elect electoral authorities, sparking concerns the move could presage a power grab.

Lopez Obrador, a leftist, has criticized electoral authorities for years, including accusing them of widespread vote fraud in 2006 and 2012 when he ran and lost bids for the presidency, arguing that the system is stacked against him.

Mexico's president downplays U.S. claim of Russian agents in Mexico

MEXICO CITY, March 25 (Reuters) - Mexico's president on Friday said he had no information about comments from a U.S. general that Russian intelligence agents are based in Mexico, and reiterated Mexico's non-interventionist stance.

"We don't have information on this," President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador told a regular news conference when asked about the general's remarks, adding that the government would not impede any foreigner from carrying out legal activities.

Mexico Foreign Minister embarks on 10-day tour of Middle East, India

23 March 2022; MEMO: Mexican Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, on Tuesday, begins a tour of the Middle East and India lasting 10 days for talks covering a jump in energy prices, investment opportunities and efforts to prevent a potential food crisis, his Ministry said, and Reuters reports.

The international trip is the longest the Foreign Minister has undertaken, an official from the Ministry said.

US reverses course, allows Ukrainian family to seek asylum

TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) — U.S. authorities allowed a Ukrainian woman and her three children to seek asylum Thursday, a reversal from a day earlier when she was denied entry under the Biden administration’s sweeping restrictions for seeking humanitarian protection.

The 34-year-old woman and her children — ages 14, 12 and 6 — entered San Diego for processing after authorities blocked her path hours earlier, triggering sharp criticism from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York and other Democrats.

Mexico's president says U.S. State Secretary "misinformed" on journalist killings

MEXICO CITY, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Wednesday snapped back at U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken after he expressed concern over a spate of journalist killings in Mexico, saying he was misinformed.

"What he's saying is not true. Of course, it's very unfortunate that there are murders of journalists ... In all cases we're doing something about it, there is no impunity, these are not state crimes," Lopez Obrador said at a regular news conference.

Mexican army sends anti-mine squads to cartel turf war zone

NARANJO DE CHILA, Mexico (AP) — Special squads of Mexican army troops equipped with metal detectors and bomb suits have deployed to the western state of Michoacan, where warring drug cartels have planted land mines or improvised explosive devices.

The squads apparently have found dozens of such devices along rural roads and fields in the area around the township of Aguililla.

Migrants sew mouths shut in quest for Mexico passage to U.S. border

TAPACHULA, Mexico, Feb 15 (Reuters) - A dozen undocumented migrants on Mexico's southern border sewed their mouths shut on Tuesday in a bid to convince the country's immigration authority to grant them passage toward the U.S. border.

The migrants, mostly Central and South Americans, helped each other seal their lips using needles and plastic threads, leaving a small space to consume liquids and using alcohol to wipe away drops of blood from the stitches, Reuters images show.

Mexico celebrates 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties with China

MEXICO CITY, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Various events have been held in Mexico to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Mexico.

The Mexican Senate Monday celebrated bilateral ties with an event attended by various Mexican authorities, legislators and academics, as well as Chinese diplomats.

Mexico and China continue to endorse "a mutual commitment of loyalty and trust" after half a century of diplomatic relations, said Olga Sanchez Cordero, president of the Mexican Senate, when addressing the event.
