Russia wants to increase settlements in national currencies with BRICS, EAEU, SCO states

TASHKENT, April 25. /TASS/: Moscow is interested in increasing settlements in national currencies with BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization) and EAEU (Eurasian Economic Union) nations, Russian Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov told a forum on Monday.

Last year, Russia’s trade with EAEU, BRICS and SCO members grew by up to 38%, he said, adding that in total those integrations account for half of the global economy.

Guards clash again on Kyrgyz-Tajik border, no casualties reported

BISHKEK, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Kyrgyz and Tajik border guards exchanged fire on Thursday amid a standoff over a blocked road, in the latest clash between the former Soviet neighbours following a similar violent incident last year that killed dozens.

The border between the two countries, both of which host Russian military bases and are closely allied with Moscow, is poorly demarcated.

The Secretary General of Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO), Stanislav Zas, called for an immediate ceasefire at the border, RIA news agency reported.

Uzbekistan Helps Afghanistan Restore Mazar-I-Sharif Airport

TASHKENT, Dec 18 (NNN-XINHUA) – Uzbekistan sent specialists to Afghanistan, to help restore the Mazar-i-Sharif airport, in the north of the country, an Uzbek official said, yesterday.

“Currently, our specialists are engaged in the repair of navigation equipment and the reconstruction of the runway,” Ismatulla Irgashev, Uzbek president’s special representative for Afghanistan, told reporters.

“Most of the repair work has already been completed. I think it will continue for a maximum of another month,” he added.

Re-elected Uzbek president unveils priority tasks for country

TASHKENT, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Uzbekistan's re-elected President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was sworn in at a joint meeting of both chambers of the parliament here on Saturday, and unveiled a new development strategy prioritizing seven directions to continue his reform agenda.

The development of a free civil society, and large-scale reforms aimed at ensuring human dignity and its legitimate interests will be raised to a new level, Mirziyoyev said after taking office for a second term.

Uzbek president elected for second term

TASHKENT, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was elected for a second term with 80.12 percent of the vote in the election held Sunday, the Uzbek Central Election Commission said Friday.

"Despite the difficult situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic ... more than 16 million or 80.4 percent of voters freely expressed their will in the presidential elections and voted for the candidate they considered worthy," said the commission in a statement announcing the final results of the election.

Voter turnout at Uzbekistan’s presidential election exceeds 70%

TASHKENT, October 24. /TASS/: The voter turnout at Sunday’s presidential elections in Uzbekistan exceeded 70% at 17:30 local time (15:30 Moscow time), Bakhrom Kuchkarov, deputy chairperson of Uzbekistan’s Central Election Commission (CEC) said.

"More than 15 million people had cast their votes by 17:30 local time. The voter turnout exceeded 70%," he said, adding that the CEC was monitoring the voting process and registered a number of violations.

Uzbek president heading toward landslide win in elections

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (AP) — Uzbeks voted Sunday in a presidential election that the incumbent is expected to win in a landslide against weak competition.

Although Shavkat Mirziyoyev has relaxed many of the policies of his dictatorial predecessor, he has made little effort at political reform.

Mirziyoyev, who took office in 2016 upon the death of Islam Karimov, faces four relatively low-visibility candidates who didn’t even show up for televised debates, instead sending proxies who failed to engage in substantial discussions. Independent candidates weren’t allowed.

Gas explosion in Uzbek capital forces building residents to evacuate

TASHKENT, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- A gas explosion in the capital Tashkent has caused damage to several apartment units, with no casualties reported.

The explosion occurred on Sunday night in a residential building in Tashkent's Chilanzar district. Seventeen residents of the building are now temporarily residing in a hotel, the Uzbek Ministry of Emergencies said.

Uzbek's regional gas supply network said in a statement that the explosion occurred due to an unauthorized use of natural gas in one of the apartments which was not connected to the main gas supply system.

Uzbekistan, Afghanistan To Improve Cross-Border Transit Of Goods

TASHKENT, Sept 28 (NNN-XINHUA) – The heads of border authorities of Uzbekistan and Afghanistan, held a meeting to discuss issues related to the transit of goods being exported to Afghanistan, the Uzbek Foreign Ministry said, yesterday.

Transit of essential goods such as food, medicine, clothing, fuel and lubricants was discussed during the meeting, held at Uzbekistan’s border town of Termez, at the request of the Afghan side, it said.
