Pelestine: Gaza's health system days from being overwhelmed by COVID-19

22 Nov 2020; MEMO: A sharp rise in coronavirus infections in the Gaza Strip could overwhelm the Palestinian enclave's meagre medical system by next week, public health advisers said on Sunday, Reuters reports.

Gaza, where the dense and poor population of 2 million is vulnerable to contagions, has logged 14,000 coronavirus cases and 65 deaths, mostly since August.

India: U'khand governor tests positive for COVID-19

Dehradun, Nov 23 (PTI) Uttarakhand Governor Baby Rani Maurya has tested positive for COVID-19.

Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari had called on Maurya at the Raj Bhawan here on Saturday.

In a tweet on Sunday evening, Maurya said, "My corona report has come out positive. I am asymptomatic and have no problems. I have isolated myself under the supervision of doctors. I request everyone who came in contact with me over the last few days to get themselves tested."

U.S. sets new record-high COVID-19 daily count as total cases surpass 12 mln

WASHINGTON, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The United States reported new record-high COVID-19 daily case count at nearly 200,000 on Friday, as the total number of confirmed cases surpassed 12 million on Saturday.

The country has recorded more than 12,059,686 cases with more than 255,800 related deaths as of Saturday evening, according to the real-time count kept by Johns Hopkins University. It took only six days for the country to add over 1 million infections to a record high of 11 million cases on Nov. 15.

Turkey: 20,000 Turks volunteer for COVID-19 Chinese vaccine

About 20,000 volunteers applied for the Chinese coronavirus vaccine Friday in Turkey.

Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said the vaccine has been initially tested on health workers since Sept. 15 but citizen volunteers are needed for tests to continue.

“We announced that we seek volunteers among citizens and received 20,000 applications before the end of the day. Thank you on behalf of 83 million (citizens),” he said on Twitter.

Iran's deputy health minister resigns amid virus surge

21 Nov 2020; MEMO: Iran's deputy health minister resigned Friday amid a spike in the number of novel coronavirus cases in the country, according to Iranian media, Anadolu Agency reported.

Reza Malekzadeh accused Health Minister Saeed Namaki of mismanaging the pandemic and causing many casualties, the semi-official ISNA news agency reported.

Iran confirmed 479 more coronavirus-related fatalities on Friday, raising the nationwide death toll to 43,896, according to the country's Health Ministry.

Hong Kong bans Air India flights for 5th time over COVID cases

New Delhi, Nov 20 (PTI) Hong Kong has banned Air India flights from Delhi till December 3 after a few passengers on its flight tested positive for the novel coronavirus post-arrival earlier this week, an official said on Friday.

This is the fifth time Air India's flights from India have been banned by the Hong Kong government for bringing passengers who tested positive for the pathogen after arrival.

Daily COVID-19 deaths in US reach highest level since May

(AP) --- The surging coronavirus is taking an increasingly dire toll across the U.S. just as a vaccine appears close at hand, with the country now averaging over 1,300 COVID-19 deaths per day — the highest level since the calamitous spring in and around New York City.

The overall U.S. death toll has reached about 254,000, by far the most in the world. Confirmed infections have eclipsed more than 11.8 million, after the biggest one-day gain on record Thursday — almost 188,000. And the number of people in the hospital with COVID-19 hit another all-time high at more than 80,000.

Hong Kong to close more schools to fight virus

Hong Kong, Nov 20 (AP-PTI) Hong Kong has suspended in-person classes for lower primary school students after the city's top health official said the coronavirus situation in the city was rapidly deteriorating.

Classes for primary 1 to 3 students will be suspended for two weeks from Monday.

The suspension comes just over a week after kindergartens were ordered to close following an outbreak of upper respiratory tract infections.

Hong Kong confirmed 26 new coronavirus infections on Friday, 21 of which are local cases.
