Afghan Taliban reject rights group's concerns over security cameras in Kabul

03 September 2023; MEMO: The Afghan Taliban, on Friday, rejected Amnesty International’s concerns over the installation of cameras in the capital, Kabul, and other areas, saying these cameras are installed to maintain security, Anadolu Agency reports.

75 Afghan Prisoners Set Free From Pakistan

KABUL, Aug 30 (NNN-ANA) – A total of 75 Afghan inmates, imprisoned in Pakistan, have been set free and returned to their homeland, Afghanistan, through the Torkham border yesterday, the state-run Bakhtar News Agency reported today.

So far, Pakistan has handed over around 2,516 Afghans, jailed in Pakistani prisons to Afghan authorities, through the Torkham border, according to Bakhtar.

Weeks ago, the ministry also reported that, 52 Afghan detainees had been released from Pakistani jails and returned home.

Gold Mine Collapse In Afghanistan Killed Three

TALUQAN, Afghanistan, Aug 30 (NNN-ANA) – Three miners have been killed, after they were trapped underground, in a collapsed mine in Afghanistan’s northern Takhar province, an official said today.

Several miners were working in a tunnel of the gold mine in Rastaq district this afternoon, when the tunnel caved in, killing three miners, provincial police spokesman, Abdul Mobin Safi, said.

Without providing more details, the official added that, an investigation had been initiated into the exact cause of the accident.

Taliban mark two years since return to power in Afghanistan

KABUL, Aug 15 (Reuters) - Afghanistan's Taliban on Tuesday marked the second anniversary of their return to power, celebrating their take-over of Kabul and the establishment of what they said was security throughout the country under an Islamic system.

After a lightning offensive as U.S.-led foreign forces were withdrawing after 20 years of inconclusive war, the Taliban entered the capital on Aug. 15, 2021, as the U.S.-backed president, Ashraf Ghani, fled and the Afghan security forces, set up with years of Western support, disintegrated.

Afghan universities ready to readmit women but not until Taliban leader says it’s ok, official says

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghanistan’s universities are ready to readmit female students, but the ruling Taliban’s leader has the ultimate say on when that might happen — if it happens at all, an education official said Saturday.

The Taliban barred women from campuses last December, triggering global outrage. Girls had been banned from school beyond sixth grade soon after the Taliban returned to power in August 2021. Afghanistan is the only country in the world with bans on female education.

Afghan Central Bank To Auction 13 Million USD To Keep Afghani Stable

KABUL, Aug 6 (NNN-ANA) – Afghanistan’s central bank, Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB), announced yesterday, to put on auction 13 million U.S. dollars today, to keep the country’s national currency, the afghani, stable against foreign currencies, a statement of the bank said.

According to the statement, DAB has called upon qualified banks and money exchange companies, to attend the bidding and the winner should pay in cash.

Police arrest 29 alleged criminals in Afghanistan

KABUL, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Police arrested 29 people on charge of involvement in criminal activities over the past 24 hours in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Interior Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the statement, police arrested the 29 individuals involved in criminal activities including theft, drug smuggling and carrying weapons illegally from nine out of the country's 34 provinces.

Similarly, police also arrested seven people on charge of involvement in selling illicit drugs in northern Baghlan province a couple of days ago, police said.

Afghan acting FM asks U.S. to lift sanctions: gov't spokesman

KABUL, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Afghan Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi told U.S. officials at a meeting held in Doha that the U.S. sanctions against Afghanistan should be removed, the local Tolonews TV reported.

The Afghan media quoted the caretaker government's spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid as saying on Monday evening that Muttaqi also urged the U.S. side not to create obstacles to the economic development of Afghanistan.
