UNICEF seeks more aid for at-risk Mideast kids amid pandemic

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — The U.N. children’s agency appealed Monday for an additional $92.4 million to help fight the coronavirus pandemic in the Middle East and North Africa, a conflict-battered region with the highest number of children in need anywhere.

Yemen is a top concern, said Ted Chaiban, the regional chief of UNICEF. After five years of civil war, half the health centers in Yemen no longer operate. Two million children are malnourished, including 400,000 who suffer from severe acute malnutrition.

Jordan To Ease Curfew Restrictions In Some Areas

AMMAN, Apr 16 (NNN-PETRA) – Jordan said Wednesday, it will start reducing curfew restrictions in some areas, where no cases of the COVID-19 have been reported.

Jordan’s Minister of State for Media Affairs, Amjad Adaileh, said, there will be fewer restrictions in certain governorates, according to a statement.

He added that, there will be measures to ensure the safety of citizens, and if these are not respected, the curfew will resume.

Jordan to ease curfew restrictions in some areas

AMMAN, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Jordan said Wednesday it will start reducing curfew restrictions in some areas where no cases of the novel coronavirus have been reported.

Jordan's Minister of State for Media Affairs Amjad Adaileh said there will be fewer restrictions in certain governorates, according to a statement.

He added that there will be measures to ensure the safety of citizens and if these are not respected, the curfew will resume.

The easing of restrictions will start as of next week in coastal city Aqaba in the south and will extend to other governorates.

Jordan extends closure of government offices until end of April

13 April 2020; MEMO: Jordan on Sunday extended a month-long lockdown that has closed schools, universities and government agencies until the end of the month to stem the spread of coronavirus, the government spokesman said.

Amjad Adailah said Prime Minister Omar Razzaz took the decision in light of “developments and recommendations” related to the pandemic. Medical and essential public services were exempt.

Jordan goes on virus lockdown as Iran’s death toll mounts

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — Air raid sirens echoed across Jordan’s capital Saturday to mark the start of a three-day curfew, the latest mass lockdown in the Middle East aimed at containing the coronavirus, which has claimed another 123 lives in Iran, home to the region’s worst outbreak.

The latest deaths bring Iran’s overall toll to 1,556 amid 20,610 confirmed cases, according to figures released by the Health Ministry. Iran has faced widespread criticism for its lagging response to the outbreak, which has even infected and killed some senior officials.

Jordan Cuts Bank Reserves To Inject Liquidity

AMMAN, Mar 16 (NNN-PETRA) – Jordan’s central bank, on Sunday, decided to lower the compulsory reserves that banks hold, in order to make more liquidity available on the markets.

The remarks were made by the central bank governor, Ziad Fariz, who said that the reserve cuts will be from seven to five percent.

The measures will enable the banks to lower the interest rates on facilities provided to institutions and individuals, he said.

Jordan Highlights UNESCO’s Role In Preserving Jerusalem’s Old City

AMMAN, Mar 5 (NNN-PETRA) – King Abdullah II of Jordan, highlighted the role played by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), in preserving World Heritage Sites in danger, especially the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls.

The king made the remarks at a meeting in Amman with UNESCO Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, during which they discussed advancing cooperation, especially in safeguarding cultural heritage.

Jordan, Norway FMs Vow To Boost Ties

AMMAN, Mar 4 (NNN-PETRA) – Foreign ministers of Jordan and Norway, today (Wednesday), expressed willingness to boost ties and signed an agreement, outlining bilateral consultation, Jordanian Foreign Ministry said, in a statement.

During a meeting at the Dead Sea, with Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ine Eriksen Soreide, Jordanian Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi said, Jordan and Norway share common stances and values, stressing the potential for cooperation in the fields of trade, investment, tourism, education and defence.
