S.Korea minister expects China to play role in N.Korea peacemaking

(Reuters) -South Korea’s foreign minister said on Saturday he expects China to play a role in peacemaking between South and North Korea, inviting China’s president to visit as the United States and its allies agreed to continue pushing Pyongyang to denuclearise.

“South Korea and China share a common goal toward complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and toward permanent peacemaking policies,” Chung Eui-yong was quoted as saying by South Korean news agency Yonhap.

Chung extended the invitation to President Xi Jinping to visit when COVID-19 stabilises.

N. Korea calls South’s leader ‘a parrot raised by America’

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea called South Korea’s president “a parrot raised by America” Tuesday, resuming its trademark derisive rhetoric against its rivals amid renewed animosities on the Korean Peninsula.

Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, issued the latest verbal salvo after South Korean President Moon Jae-in criticized the North’s missile launches last week. She said Moon’s “illogical and brazen-faced” comments echoed the U.S. stance.

Russian, South Korean defense officials agree to expand cooperation

SEOUL, March 29. /TASS/: South Korea has called on Russia to provide active support to the denuclearization process on the Korean Peninsula, a spokesperson for the South Korean Defense Ministry said on Monday during a press briefing, commenting on the talks between South Korean Vice Defense Minister Park Jae-min and Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin.

North Korea snaps back at Biden over criticism of launches

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Saturday snapped back at President Joe Biden’s criticism of its ballistic missile tests, calling his comments a provocation and encroachment on the North’s right to self-defense and vowing to continuously expand its “most thoroughgoing and overwhelming military power.”

The statement issued by senior official Ri Pyong Chol came after the North on Thursday tested-fired two short-range missiles off its eastern coast in the first ballistic launches since Biden took office.

Covid-19: 7 more US soldiers in South Korea test positive

SEOUL, March 25 (NNN-Xinhua) — Seven more US soldiers in South Korea tested positive for COVID-19, the US Forces Korea (USFK) said Thursday.

The USFK said in a statement that seven USFK service members were confirmed with the COVID-19 after arriving in South Korea between March 8 and 22.

Three service members arrived at Osan Air Base on US government-chartered flights from the United States on March 8 and 22. The Osan Air Base is located in Pyeongtaek, 70 km south of Seoul.

North Korea test-fires ballistic missiles in message to US

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Thursday test-fired its first ballistic missiles since President Joe Biden took office, as it expands its military capabilities and increases pressure on Washington while nuclear negotiations remain stalled.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said the launches threaten “peace and safety in Japan and the region,” and that Tokyo will closely coordinate with Washington and Seoul on the North’s testing activities.

Xi, Kim share messages reaffirming China-N. Korea alliance

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The leaders of China and North Korea are reaffirming their traditional alliance following contentious talks between top diplomats from Washington and Beijing and diplomatic isolation and economic problems in the North that have left it ever-more dependent on the Chinese.

The North’s official Korean Central News Agency said Tuesday leader Kim Jong Un called for stronger “unity and cooperation” with China in the face of challenges posed by “hostile forces” while exchanging messages with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

4 more U.S. soldiers in S. Korea test positive for COVID-19

SEOUL, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Four more U.S. soldiers in South Korea tested positive for COVID-19, the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) said on Monday.

The USFK said in a statement that the four USFK service members were confirmed with COVID-19 after arriving in South Korea between March 8 and 15.

Three of the service members arrived at Osan Air Base on U.S. government-chartered flights from the United States on March 8 and March 15. The Osan Air Base is located in Pyeongtaek, 70 km south of Seoul.

UN says no international staff left in North Korea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A U.N. spokesman said the world body in North Korea has been left with no international staff, who are now working remotely.

Despite claiming to be coronavirus free, North Korea has sealed off its borders as part of stringent anti-pandemic measures that also involved the departure of diplomats and foreign nationals.

Earlier this week, the last remaining two international U.N. staffers, both with the World Food Program, reportedly left Pyongyang.

North Korea cuts ties with Malaysia over US extradition

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Friday announced the termination of diplomatic ties with Malaysia over its decision to allow the extradition of a North Korean criminal suspect to the United States. It’s the latest development in growing animosity between Washington and Pyongyang as the North ramps up pressure on the Biden administration over a nuclear standoff.
