Pakistan, other countries hail global funding plan for schools in poor nations

UNITED NATIONS, Sep 17 (APP): With the ‘Transforming Education Summit’ underway at the UN General Assembly, leaders of Pakistan and several other countries Saturday backed the establishment of the first-ever international funding mechanism for schools to widen access to education in some of the world’s poorest countries.

UN summit returns in person to world of divisions

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The UN General Assembly is back in person after the pandemic disruption but in a world as full of crises as ever, with the war in Ukraine set to pit the West against Russia.

Some 150 world leaders will descend on New York for a week of diplomacy, with all required to come in person to speak save one — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, granted an exception as he leads the fight against Russian invaders.

NEW YORK, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Up to 77 percent of Black Americans said the descendants of people enslaved in U.S. history should be repaid in some way, reported U.S. media outlet USA Today this week, citing a recent survey by Pew Research Center.

However, most of the interviewees don't think the Blacks will get the reparation though the goal has been long sought by the ethnic group and some U.S. officials, said the report.

Ugandan young climate activist named UNICEF goodwill ambassador

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Vanessa Nakate, a 25-year-old climate activist from Uganda, was appointed on Thursday as the newest goodwill ambassador of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF).

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell described Nakate as instrumental in redirecting the conversation on climate change to focus on the people most affected by the crisis: the poor and the marginalized.

UN chief raises alarm over ‘backsliding’ of democracy worldwide

UNITED NATIONS, Sep 15 (APP): On the 15th anniversary of the International Day of Democracy, commemorated on Thursday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that “across the world, democracy is backsliding”.

“Civic space is shrinking. Distrust and disinformation are growing. And polarization is undermining democratic institutions,” he said in his video message marking the day.

He said that “now is the time” to raise the alarm, and “reaffirm that democracy, development, and human rights are interdependent and mutually reinforcing”.

UN chief says General Assembly debate must be about hope

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Wednesday that next week's General Debate of the General Assembly must be about hope.

"This year's General Debate must be about providing hope and overcoming the divisions that are dramatically impacting the world," he told a press conference ahead of the high-level week of this year's General Assembly session.

"That hope can only come through the dialogue and debate that are the beating heart of the United Nations and that must prevail next week against all divisions," he said.

UN chief urges rich nations ‘not to lose one moment’ in helping flood-hit Pakistan

UNITED NATIONS, Sep 14 (APP): Pakistan needs a “massive inflow of financial resources” to help it cope with the devastation caused by the climate-induced floods, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Wednesday, as he appealed to wealthy countries “not to lose one moment’ in coming to the aid of the country.

“What is happening in Pakistan demonstrates the sheer inadequacy of the global response to the climate crisis, and the betrayal and injustice at the heart of it,” he told his annual pre-General Assembly press conference in response to a question from APP correspondent.

UN chief appeals for cooperation to address ‘world in peril’

UNITED NATIONS, Sept 14 (NNN-AGENCIES) — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for solidarity and cooperation to address a “world in peril” at the opening of the 77th United Nations General Assembly.

“We face a world in peril across our work to advance peace, human rights and sustainable development,” Guterres said, citing conflicts and climate change, a “broken global financial system,” poverty, inequality, hunger and divisions.

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The 77th session of the UN General Assembly opened on Tuesday, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for solidarity among member states to address common challenges.

The many challenges that defined the 76th session of the General Assembly are still very much around as the new session starts, Guterres told the opening of the 77th session.
