UNGA decides to continue UNSC reform talks during next session; Pakistan urges flexibility to reconcile divergent stands

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 13 (APP): The General Assembly Tuesday decided that intergovernmental negotiations (IGN) on enlarging the UN Security Council will continue during its upcoming 77th session, with the 193-member body’s President , Abdulla Shahid, saying that the negotiating process this year has made progress towards agreement on reforming the 15-member Council.

“We have made progress this year. This is clear,” Shahid said, ahead of the unanimous adoption of a draft oral decision to rollover the IGN process to upcoming session that begins in September this year.

Security Council underlines importance of strategic communications in UN peacekeeping

UNITED NATIONS, July 12 (Xinhua) -- The Security Council on Tuesday underscored the importance of strategic communications to the implementation of UN peacekeeping operations' mandates and to the safety and security of peacekeepers.

In a presidential statement, the council recognizes that strategic communications and the provision of accurate content by UN peacekeeping operations help strengthen understanding of their mandates, manage expectations and garner trust and support among relevant stakeholders, and contribute to countering disinformation and misinformation.

USA: Twitter sues to force Musk to complete his $44B acquisition

(AP) --- Twitter sued Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Tuesday, trying to force him to complete his $44 billion takeover of the social media company by accusing him of “outlandish” and “bad faith” actions that have caused the platform irreparable harm and “wreaked havoc” on its stock price.

Back in April, Musk pledged to pay $54.20 a share for Twitter, which agreed to those terms after reversing its initial opposition to the deal. But the two sides have been bracing for a legal fight since the billionaire said Friday that he was backing away from his agreement to buy the company.

UN limits aid to Syrian rebels to 6 months in a Russian win

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. Security Council approved a resolution Tuesday extending humanitarian aid deliveries to 4.1 million people in Syria’s rebel-held northwest for just six months in a victory for Russia.

The vote was 12-0 with the United States, Britain and France abstaining. The three veto-wielding council members had backed a resolution for a year-long extension that was supported by almost the entire 15-member council but vetoed by Russia last Friday.

UN chief calls for dialogue to ensure ‘smooth transition’ of power in Sri Lanka

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 11 (APP): Amid reports that Sri Lanka’s President has confirmed he will resign after his residence was stormed by thousands of protesters at the weekend, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday called for dialogue to “ensure a smooth transition of government and solutions to the country’s deep economic crisis.”

World population to reach 8 bln on Nov. 15: UN

UNITED NATIONS, July 11 (Xinhua) -- The global population is projected to reach 8 billion on Nov. 15, with India projected to surpass China as the most populous country in 2023, the United Nations (UN) said Monday, World Population Day.

"It is a reminder of our shared responsibility to care for our planet and a moment to reflect on where we still fall short of our commitments to one another," said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The growth rate is at its slowest since 1950, having fallen under 1 percent in 2020, according to the World Population Prospects 2022.

USA: Elon Musk decides against buying Twitter – CNBC

NEW YORK, July 9. /TASS/: US billionaire Elon Musk has terminated his deal to purchase Twitter social network, CNBC television channel reported.

According to CNBC, "Musk wants to end his deal to buy Twitter, according to a letter sent by a lawyer on his behalf to the company’s chief legal officer."

A copy of the letter was published on the official website of the US Securities and Exchange Commission. In the letter, attorney Mike Ringler charged that "Twitter has not complied with its contractual obligations."

Moscow is seeking a six-month extension, with the possibility to renew, while Western nations want a full year for the transfers, which are being conducted without approval from Damascus.

The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2022 reveals that the convergence of increased fighting, the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, and the long-term climate crisis, could push an additional 75 to 95 million people into extreme poverty this year - compared with pre-pandemic projections - and jeopardize the SDG blueprint for more resilient, peaceful and equal societies.
