Russia, US exchange accusations over Ukraine at UN

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Russia accused the West on Monday of “whipping up tensions” over Ukraine and said the U.S. had brought “pure Nazis” to power in Kyiv as the U.N. Security Council held a stormy and bellicose debate on Moscow’s troop buildup near its southern neighbor.

U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield shot back that Russia’s growing military force of more than 100,000 troops along Ukraine’s borders was “the largest mobilization” in Europe in decades, adding that there has been a spike in cyberattacks and Russian disinformation.

USA: New York hit by heavy snow, wind gusts from winter storm Kenan

NEW YORK, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Winter storm Kenan is bringing heavy snow and wind gusts to New York City and surrounding areas on Saturday.

New York City is expected to receive 8 to 12 inches of total snowfall from Friday evening to early Sunday, according to a forecast issued by the National Weather Service on early Saturday.

Suffolk and Nassau counties are being hit hardest with 7 to 11 inches of snowfall as of 9:30 a.m. and another 5 to 12 inches expected, said New York Governor Kathy Hochul at a press briefing near noon on Saturday.

Security Council renews mandate of UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 29 (NNN-Xinhua) — The UN Security Council renewed the mandate for the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) until July 31, 2022, but expressed serious concern about several issues, including the continued violations of the military status quo along the ceasefire lines.

Unanimously adopting resolution 2618, the council called on the leaders of the two Cypriot communities and all involved parties to refrain from any actions and rhetoric that might damage the settlement process and that could raise tensions on the island.

UN Releases 20 Million USD In Relief For Yemen Victims Following Recent Airstrikes

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 29 (NNN-AGENCIES) – The United Nations yesterday, released 20 million U.S. dollars in emergency funds for 270,000 people in Yemen, including those newly displaced by airstrikes, a UN spokesman said.

UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, allocated the money from the Central Emergency Response Fund, to support the humanitarian relief for people in Marib, al-Jawf and Hadramout, said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres.

CHAMPLAIN, N.Y. (AP) — Whenever a bus arrives at the Greyhound station in Plattsburgh, New York, a small band of taxi drivers waits to drive passengers on a half-hour trip to a snowy, dead-end road that turns to dirt near the Canadian border.

There, at the border, refugees pile out of taxis or vans several times a day, and Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers warn that they will be arrested for illegal entry if they cross, which they do. Most are soon released to pursue asylum, living and working freely while awaiting a decision.

Global gold demand rises 10% to 4,021 tonnes in 2021: WGC

Mumbai, Jan 28 (PTI) Global gold demand rose 10 per cent to 4,021.3 tonnes in 2021 on account of a massive 50 per cent surge in year-on-year demand -- a 10-quarter high -- during the December quarter, a report by the World Gold Council (WGC) said.

The overall gold demand during 2020, which was impacted following Covid-19 related disruptions, stood at 3,658.8 tonnes, the WGC said in its 'Gold Demand Trends 2021' Report.
