Chinese minister rejects India’s objections to CPEC at a UN event

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 23 (APP): A Chinese minister Friday brushed aside Indian concerns over the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), saying it is an economic cooperation project, not related to any third party.

“It (CPEC) is not related to their (Indian) sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Dai Dongchang, China’s Minister of Transport, said in response to the objections voiced by an Indian delegate at the virtual briefing on Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Transport for Global Development.

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- More than 80 countries opposed the interference in China's internal affairs under the pretext of human rights at the Third Committee of the 76th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on Thursday.

During the meeting, Zhang Jun, China's permanent representative to the UN, resolutely refuted the unfounded accusations against China which were launched by a few countries, including the United States and France.

He expressed China's firm opposition, and later held a press conference on China's position on human rights issues.

USA: Giuliani associate convicted of campaign finance crimes

NEW YORK (AP) — A Florida businessman who helped Rudy Giuliani’s effort to dig up dirt on Joe Biden in Ukraine was convicted Friday of campaign finance crimes, including funneling a Russian entrepreneur’s money to U.S. politicians.

Lev Parnas was on trial for more than two weeks as prosecutors accused him of using other people’s money to pose as a powerful political broker and cozy up to some of the nation’s star Republicans.

USA: Robert Durst charged with 1982 murder of wife Kathie Durst

NEW YORK (AP) — Millionaire real estate scion Robert Durst has been charged in suburban New York City with the death of his former wife, Kathie Durst, who vanished in 1982, authorities confirmed Friday.

A state police investigator filed a criminal complaint on Tuesday at a town court in Lewisboro, New York, accusing Durst of second-degree murder.

The action wasn’t announced at the time by any law enforcement officials or Westchester District Attorney Mimi Rocah, who recently convened a grand jury to consider charges.

USA: NYC requiring vaccine for cops, firefighters, city workers

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City will require police officers, firefighters and other municipal workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or be placed on unpaid leave, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday, giving an ultimatum to public employees who’ve refused and ensuring a fight with some of the unions representing them.

The mandate affecting the nation’s largest police department and more than 100,000 other Big Apple workers — including trash haulers and building inspectors — carries a Nov. 1 deadline for getting the first vaccine dose, de Blasio announced.

Pakistani envoy briefs UN chief on India’s massive repression in Kashmir, urges action to de-escalate tensions

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 19 (APP): Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Munir Akram, apprised UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about the worsening human rights situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and the concomitant threat to regional peace and security when he met him on Monday, according to Pakistani officials.

The Pakistani envoy, who called on the UN chief on instructions from Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, also urged the UN chief to take steps to promote peace in South Asia.

USA: CPJ calls detention of Kashmiri journalists ‘shameful’, demands release

NEW YORK, Oct 17 (APP): The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), an independent watchdog body, Sunday called on authorities in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJ&K) to immediately release arrested journalists, cease detaining and questioning journalists, and commit to allowing the media to operate freely.

UN chief calls rising poverty ‘a moral indictment of our times’

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 16 (APP): For the first time in two decades, extreme poverty is on the rise, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said in a sharp message released on the eve of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

Describing current levels of poverty as “a moral indictment of our times”, the UN chief said that the coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc on economies and societies around the world, with some 120 million more people falling into poverty last year.
