UNITED NATIONS, Oct 11 (APP): United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Monday made an urgent appeal to the international community to inject cash into Afghanistan’s economy to avoid collapse, warning that the world will pay a heavy price if timely action is not taken.

Speaking to reporters, he said the Afghan economy was breaking down, with assets frozen and development aid paused compounded by closing of banks and essential services, such as healthcare, suspended in many places.

World falls short on mental health goals: WHO

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 09 (APP): A World Health Organization (WHO) report released on the eve of World Mental Health Day, which is marked on Sunday, says that the world is falling short on its mental health investment goals, calling the lack of progress a “worldwide failure.”


According to the WHO’s Mental Health Atlas, released every three years, data from 171 countries shows that none of the body’s targets have been met for investing in mental health, ensuring community-based mental health services are available, awareness promotion, and strengthening information systems.

The vote passed comfortably, despite criticism in the lead-up from some countries, notably the United States and Britain.

UNITED NATIONS, Oct 08 (APP): The United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council Friday recognized, for the first time, that having a clean, healthy and sustainable environment is a human right

In a resolution, the 47-member Council, which is based in Geneva, called on States around the world to work together, and with other partners, to implement this newly recognized right.
The text, proposed by Costa Rica, the Maldives, Morocco, Slovenia and Switzerland, was passed with 43 votes in favour, with 4 abstentions.

USA: Stocks move broadly higher as receding debt fears spur rally

(AP) --- Stocks rose broadly in morning trading on Wall Street as investors welcomed signals that a standoff in Congress over the federal debt ceiling is closer to a resolution.

The S&P 500 rose 1.4% as of 10:16 a.m. Eastern. Roughly 95% of stocks within the benchmark index gained ground. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 514 points, or 1.5%, to 34,930 and the Nasdaq rose 1.6%.

Markets in Europe and Asia were also broadly higher.
