YAOUNDE, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Cameroon's Minister of Communication Rene Emmanuel Sadi on Tuesday condemned violent protests that took place Monday night in the country's largest prison commonly called Kondengui Central Prison located in the capital, Yaounde, vowing that effective investigation will be made to bring out the truth behind the riots.

BENI, Congo (AP) — The Congolese health ministry confirmed an Ebola case in Goma late Sunday, marking the first time the virus has reached the city of more than 2 million people along the border with Rwanda since the epidemic began nearly a year ago.

The health ministry said the man who had arrived earlier Sunday in the regional capital had been quickly transported to an Ebola treatment center. Authorities said they had tracked down all the passengers on the bus the man took to Goma from Butembo, one of the towns hardest hit by the disease.

MOGADISHU, July 12 (Xinhua) -- At least six people have been killed and about 50 others injured on Friday evening following a terrorist attack at a hotel in the southern city of Kismayo in Somalia, officials have confirmed.

Jubbaland security forces spokesman Abdi Nur Ibrahim Hussein said armed militants stormed a hotel in Kismayo after they rammed a vehicle loaded with explosives at the entrance.

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — Sudan’s ruling military council said it foiled an attempted military coup Thursday, just days after the military and a pro-democracy coalition agreed on a joint sovereign council to rule the country during a transition period until elections are held.

Lt. Gen. Gamal Omar, a member of the military council, said in a statement that at least 16 active and retired military officers were arrested. Security forces were pursuing the group’s leader and additional officers who took part in plotting the coup attempt, he said.

ABUJA, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Police authorities in Nigeria said 40 protesters were nabbed on Tuesday after an invasion of the national parliament by members of the Islamic Movement, also known as the Shi'ites Movement.

A march for the release of the detained leader of the Islamic Movement, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife turned violent when hundreds of protesters invaded the parliament in the capital, Abuja.

CAPE TOWN, July 8 (Xinhua) -- South Africa's Parliament vowed on Monday to do all in its power to stem illegal farm invasions as the country is pursuing a controversial land reform.

"We must do all in our power to stem illegal farm invasions and ensure that such acts of criminality do not derail the legitimate process of restitution, nor cause hardship and suffering to the rightful beneficiaries of such claims," said Nkosi Mandela, chairperson of Parliament's Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development Committee.
