North Korea worries linger as Trump leaves Japan

TOKYO (AP) — The Latest on President Donald Trump’s visit to Japan (all times local):

President Donald Trump appears to have offered little to reassure Japanese leaders on some of their key worries as he wraps up a four-day state visit.

Trump is concluding his Japanese trip with rifts still evident between the two countries on trade and North Korea.

Asian shares up in muted trading after Trump visit to Japan

TOKYO (AP) — Asian stocks mostly rose in muted trading Tuesday in the absence of major market-driving news on trade negotiations during the visit of President Donald Trump to Japan.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 added 0.4% in early trading to 21,274.60, while Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.6% to 6,490.40. South Korea’s Kospi was little changed but inched up to 2,045.11. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng added 0.3% to 27,375.16, while the Shanghai Composite rose nearly 0.6% to 2,908.40.

Abe says he is outraged over Japan stabbings

KAWASAKI, Japan (AP) — The Latest on a stabbing attack at a bus stop just outside Japan’s capital (all times local):

Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has described a fatal stabbing spree near Tokyo as harrowing, adding that he is outraged and will take all necessary measures for children’s safety.

Authorities say a man carrying a knife in each hand attacked schoolgirls waiting at a bus stop in Kawasaki, just outside Tokyo on Tuesday, wounding 16 people and leaving three dead, including himself. Most of the injured were schoolgirls at a Catholic school.

World shares advance as centrists lose ground in EU vote

BANGKOK (AP) — Shares advanced Monday in Europe after centrists lost ground to pro-business and environmentalist groups in elections for the 28-nation bloc’s parliamentary assembly.

Germany’s DAX climbed 0.5% to 12,066.21 and the CAC 40 in France added 0.3% to 5,332.66. Markets were closed in Britain. With U.S. markets closed for the Memorial Day holiday, the future contract for the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged 0.1% higher to 25,652.00 and that for the S&P 500 was nearly unchanged at 2,832.90.

China state TV carries Daily Show spot on Huawei lead in 5G

BEIJING (AP) — China has deployed an unlikely voice in its trade war with the U.S.: Trevor Noah of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show.

A brief clip from the comedian’s “If You Don’t Know, Now You Know” segment on Chinese equipment maker Huawei’s dominance in next-generation 5G mobile technology ran on state broadcaster CCTV’s national lunchtime news on Monday.

It was part of a barrage of stories and commentaries attacking the U.S. stance in the standoff between the world’s two largest economies.

Trump agrees with Kim on Biden’s “low IQ”

TOKYO (AP) — The Latest on President Donald Trump’s visit to Japan (all times local):

President Donald Trump sided with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un and continued to criticize former Vice President and 2020 Democratic hopeful Joe Biden — this time on the world stage.

Trump said in response to a question at a joint press conference with the prime minister of Japan that Kim “made a statement that Joe Biden is a low IQ individual. Trump said the assessment “probably is based on his record. I think I agree with him on that.”

Asian shares mixed as markets await news on China-US trade

BANGKOK (AP) — Shares were mixed early Monday in Asia in the absence of fresh news on the tariffs standoff between the U.S. and China.

U.S. markets will be closed for the Memorial Day holiday.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 index advanced 0.3% to 21,173.27 after visiting President Donald Trump said he expects a deal with Tokyo on trade after a Japanese election in July.

North Korea calls Bolton “defective human product”

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Monday called U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton a “war monger” and “defective human product” after he called the North’s recent tests of short-range missile a violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

The statement by an unnamed North Korean foreign ministry spokesman came as President Donald Trump continued his visit to Japan for meetings with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in which the nuclear standoff with North Korea was expected to be high on the agenda.
