US plans to hike tariffs Friday, says China broke promises

WASHINGTON (AP) — Accusing Beijing of “reneging” on commitments it made in earlier talks, the nation’s top trade negotiator said Monday that the Trump administration will increase tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods Friday, a sharp escalation in a yearlong trade dispute.

At the same time, a Chinese trade delegation is expected to arrive in Washington to resume negotiations on Thursday, a day later than originally planned.

AI highlighted in China's national competition of vocational skills

BEIJING, May 5 (Xinhua): Students from across the country are working to showcase the skills of artificial intelligence during a national vocational students' skills competition which started Sunday.

Events involving big data, cloud computing, intelligent logistics and smart homes will be held between students from China's vocational schools at this year's competition, according to a notice issued by the Ministry of Education.

Skills related to national strategic industries such as information technologies, intelligent manufacturing and new energy are also included.

Washington, May 6 (PTI) China is considering to cancel the high-level trade talks with the US, multiple media reports have said, hours after President Donald Trump threatened to impose more punishing tariffs on USD 200 billion worth of Chinese products.

Asian markets plunge after Trump threatens China tariff hike

BANGKOK (AP) — Shares tumbled in Asia early Monday after President Donald Trump threatened to impose more tariffs on China, spooking investors who had been expecting good news this week on trade.

The Shanghai Composite index plunged 5.2% to 2,918.65, and the Hang Seng in Hong Kong sank 3.4% to 29,060.87. The future contract for the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.9% to 26,003.00, while that for the S&P 500 also shed 1.9%, to 2,892.20.

Canada grabs 2 golds at FINA Artistic Swimming World Series

BEIJING, May 4 (Xinhua): Canadian artistic swimmers enjoyed a flying start as Jacqueline Simoneau topped the solo technical and later joined with Cluadia Holzner to claim victory in duet technical routine on the first day of the FINA Artistic Swimming World Series (CHN) held here on Saturday.

Simoneau breezed to win in 88.3898 points, beating Oleksand Burdova of Ukraine at 84.0224.

7 injured in rebel attack in Philippines

MANILA, May 5 (Xinhua): An army soldier, two militiamen and four civilians were wounded in an attack Saturday by suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) insurgents in Camarines Sur province, south of Manila, a military spokesman said Sunday.

Joash Pramis, public affairs chief of Philippine Army's 9th infantry division, said the government security forces and civilians were repairing a busted water pipe in a remote village in Camarines Sur province when at least 10 NPA rebels opened fire at them around 7:30 a.m. local time on Saturday.

Kim oversees missile firing drills, tells troops to be alert

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean state media on Sunday showed leader Kim Jong Un observing live-fire drills of long-range multiple rocket launchers and what appeared to be a new short-range ballistic missile, a day after South Korea expressed concern that the launches were a violation of an inter-Korean agreement to cease all hostile acts.

Japan says North Korean missiles did not reach its economic zone

TOKYO, May 4. /TASS/: North Korea’s missiles fired in the direction of the Sea of Japan have not reached Japan’s exclusive economic zone, the country’s government said.

"We have not registered any missile in our economic zone," the Kyodo news agency quoted a spokesman for the cabinet as saying. He also rejected reports that Pyongyang had launched ballistic missiles.

Earlier, the Yonhap news agency reported citing South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) that North Korea had fired several short-range missiles, which flew some 70-200 km.

Japan’s private rocket reaches outer space

TOKYO (AP) — A Japanese aerospace startup funded by a former internet maverick successfully launched a small rocket into space Saturday, making it the first commercially developed Japanese rocket to reach orbit.

Interstellar Technology Inc. said the unmanned MOMO-3 rocket exceeded 100 kilometers (60 miles) in altitude before falling into the Pacific Ocean. It was launched from the company’s test site in the town of Taiki on Japan’s northern main island of Hokkaido and flew about 10 minutes.
