China defends blocking Azhar terror listing, says it will help in finding lasting solution

Beijing, Mar 14; PTI?GANASHAKTI: China on Thursday defended its fourth "technical hold" on the designation of Pakistan-based JeM chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist, saying the move would give it time for a "thorough and in-depth assessment" of the case and help the parties concerned to engage in more talks to find a "lasting solution" acceptable to all.

China's new foreign investment law to boost opening-up

WASHINGTON, March 13 (Xinhua) -- A longtime U.S. observer on China has said the draft foreign investment law being deliberated in Beijing is "definitely a step forward" in the country's continued reform and opening-up.

David Dollar, a senior fellow in the John L. Thornton China Center at the Brookings Institution, told Xinhua in an interview on Monday that he believes the draft law will attract more foreign investment.

China issues report on U.S. human rights situation

BEIJING, March 14 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday published a report on human rights situation in the United States.

The report, titled "Human Rights Record of the United States in 2018," was released by the Information Office of the State Council in response to the 2018 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices issued by the U.S. State Department on March 13, local time.

First China-made polar cruise ship tests water

NANJING, March 12 (Xinhua) -- The first China-made cruise ship for polar expeditions tested the water on Tuesday in Haimen, east China's Jiangsu Province.

Hu Xianfu, general manager of the shipbuilder China Merchants Group, said the 104.4-meters long vessel is 18.4 meters at the beam. It can operate at a speed of 15.5 knots.

With a gross tonnage of 7,400 tonnes, it can accommodate 255 people on board.

Xi stresses timely completion of military development goals

BEIJING, March 12 (Xinhua) -- President Xi Jinping on Tuesday stressed fulfilling the set targets and tasks of national defense and military development as scheduled.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks when attending a plenary meeting of the delegation of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and armed police force at the second session of the 13th National People's Congress, China's national legislature.

Singapore suspends Boeing 737 MAX flights

SINGAPORE, March 12 (Xinhua) -- The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) is temporarily suspending all Boeing 737 MAX flights in its airspace on Tuesday days after a plane crash in Ethiopia.

The aviation regulator explained that the decision was made "in light of two fatal accidents involving Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in less than five months."

Indonesia offers assistance in Ethiopia's Boeing 737 MAX crash

Beijing, Mar 11 (AP) China's civilian aviation authority ordered all Chinese airlines to temporarily ground their Boeing 737 Max 8 planes Monday as world carriers assessed the situation following the crash of one of the aircraft in Ethiopia.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China said the order was issued at 9:00 a.m. (0100 GMT) on Monday and would last nine hours.

Indonesian freed in Kim Jong Nam murder trial

11 Mar 2019; DW: A court in Malaysia unexpectedly dropped a murder charge against Siti Aisyah on Monday, two years after Kim Jong Nam, the half brother of the North Korean leader, was poisoned in a Kuala Lumpur airport terminal.

"I am surprised and very happy. I didn't expect it," she told reporters, saying she had only learned that morning she would be freed. Aisyah was later seen getting into an embassy car as she left the court.

China suspends use of Boeing 737 Max 8 planes

BEIJING, March 11 (Xinhua) -- China's civil aviation regulator Monday ordered domestic airlines to suspend commercial operations of all Boeing 737-8 airplanes by 6 p.m. local time after a crash of one of the planes in Ethiopia.

This came after an Ethiopian Airlines airplane bound for Nairobi, Kenya, crashed minutes after take-off Sunday, killing all 157 people aboard. It was the second crash of the new aircraft after one operated by Indonesia's Lion Air crashed in October.
