Toyota cuts full-year profit forecast, warns over Brexit

06 Feb 2019; AFP: Japanese car giant Toyota slashed its full-year net profit forecast Wednesday after saying its nine-month figure had tumbled nearly 30 percent as it was hit by investment losses.

The firm's senior managing officer Masayoshi Shirayanagi also told reporters there was no way to avoid a negative impact in the event of a no-deal Brexit -- days after fellow Japanese carmarker Nissan announced a cut in production in Britain.

First China-made sci-fi blockbuster to debut in U.S.

NEW YORK, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Science-fiction (sci-fi) lovers and cinemagoers in the United States can soon enjoy China's first homemade sci-fi blockbuster as "The Wandering Earth" will premiere in the country on Tuesday, the first day of the Chinese New Year.

A total of 29 cities across the United States will see the movie released, among which 12 will roll out the movie in the form of IMAX 3D, including New York City, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and San Francisco.

China's 35th Antarctic expedition teams leave Taishan Station for Zhongshan Station

The Kunlun team and the Taishan team of China's 35th Antarctic expedition left the Taishan Station for Zhongshan Station, which is some 520 kilometers away. They are expected to reach the destination on Feb. 8.

China's economy made steady progress, policies in place to deal with risks: Xi

Beijing, Feb 3 (PTI) Playing down concerns over economic slowdown in China amid the intense trade war with the US, President Xi Jinping on Sunday said the world's second largest economy has made "steady" progress as his government took new steps for reforms and opening-up of economy to avert major risks.

Greeting Chinese people on the eve of the Lunar New Year, also known as Spring Festival, Xi said at an official reception here that in the past year China has made efforts and "achieved a lot".

Foreign businesses fret as China fast-tracks investment law

03 Feb 2019; AFP: China is fast-tracking a foreign investment law at an unprecedented pace to meet Washington's demands on trade, but businesses fear that time to review and raise objections on a crucial piece of legislation has been cut short.

The law will eliminate the requirement for foreign enterprises to transfer proprietary technology to Chinese joint-venture partners.

It also includes other steps to level the business playing field that Western trading partners have long demanded.

Philippine troops clashes with militants

03 Feb 2019; DW: Philippine troops battled militants in a series of intense jungle clashes on Saturday after a bombing at a cathedral killed 22 people last weekend. The military said that five soldiers and three extremists were killed in the fighting.

The Interior Ministry has said that the man and woman who carried out the bombing were Indonesian nationals. The government of Indonesia has said that it can not yet confirm this report.

German WW1 grenade found in potato shipment

03 Feb 2019; DW: A police bomb squad was called to the Calbee snacks factory in eastern Hong Kong after staff there found a hand grenade from the First World War inside a crate of French potatoes, police said.

Officers moved cars and piled sandbags around the 1-kilogram (2.2-pound) device before safely destroying it.

"The grenade was in an unstable condition because it has been previously discharged but failed to detonate," Superintendent Wilfred Wong Ho-hon told reporters.

Chinese scientists develop new catalyst for hydrogen fuel cells

HEFEI, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese scientists announced that they have successfully addressed a key problem impeding the promotion of hydrogen vehicles by developing a new catalyst system for fuel cells.

A research team led by Lu Junling, Wei Shiqiang and Yang Jinlong at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), has developed a new catalyst for fuel cells, which could prolong battery life and greatly extend the range of proper temperature for cells to work.

China's first PPP-funded high-speed railway under construction

BEIJING, Feb.2 (Xinhua) -- Construction of China's first public-private partnership (PPP) funded high-speed railway has kicked off, China Railway Construction Corporation said Saturday.

The 266.9-km railway will start from the city of Hangzhou, crossing Shaoxing and ending in Taizhou, all cities in east China's Zhejiang Province.

The rail line is designed to run at a top speed of 350 km per hour, according to the company.

6.1 magnitude earthquake strikes off western Indonesia

JAKARTA, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- A shallow earthquake with a revised magnitude of 6.1 rocked West Sumatra province of western Indonesia on Saturday, but was not potential for tsunami, the meteorology and geophysics agency said.

There were no initial reports of damages or casualty after the main shock, according to the national disaster management agency.

The meteorology agency said earlier that the quake was at 6.0 magnitude before revising it to 6.1, Agung M. Utomo, official in charge of the agency told Xinhua.
