Harris meets with Singapore officials to begin Asia visit

SINGAPORE (AP) — The White House on Monday announced a series of new agreements with Singapore aimed at combating cyberthreats, tackling climate change, addressing the COVID-19 pandemic and alleviating supply chain issues. The announcements coincide with Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit to the region, as part of the Biden administration’s efforts to counter Chinese influence there.

Pakistan inches toward a digital future amid fruitful BRI cooperation

BEIJING, Aug 22 (APP): Over the years, countries along the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) including Pakistan have collaborated to explore the Digital Silk Road and reaped fruitful benefits in this regard.

This was stated by Li Yikai, Deputy Director of Centre for International Economic and Technological Cooperation, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China (MIIT), at the 2021 Online Silk Road Conference of the Fifth China-Arab States Expo held in China’s northwest city of Yinchuan.

Vaccinated Philippine workers can enter Hong Kong from Aug 30, says minister

MANILA, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Filipino workers who have been vaccinated in the Philippines will be allowed to enter Hong Kong from Aug. 30, Manila's labour minister said on Sunday.

Labour Secretary Silvestre Bello said Hong Kong has agreed to let overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who received COVID-19 vaccines in their home country come and work provided they can present vaccine cards issued by the Philippines' Bureau of Quarantine.

The agreement should benefit some 3,000 workers waiting to be deployed to Hong Kong, Bello said in a statement.

South Korea to get more Moderna COVID shots in boost to vaccination effort

SEOUL, Aug 22 (Reuters) - South Korea's health ministry said on Sunday that Moderna Inc (MRNA.O) will supply the country with 7.01 million doses of coronavirus vaccines by the first week of September, following a government request to speed up delivery.

Some 1.01 million doses are expected to arrive on Monday, the ministry said, with another 6 million to be supplied sequentially.

Cambodia's Delta variant cases jump to 999 with 163 new infections

PHNOM PENH, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's Ministry of Health (MoH) announced on Sunday that another 163 new cases of the Delta COVID-19 variant were confirmed, bringing the total number of such cases in the Southeast Asian nation to 999.

"So far, the Delta variant has hit 23 out of the kingdom's 25 cities and provinces," the MoH said in a statement, adding that only in Kep and Kratie provinces the variant has not been found yet.

Malaysian PM urges country to unite in COVID-19 fight in inaugural speech

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Sunday urged his country to unite against the difficulties posted by the COVID-19 pandemic in his first public speech since being appointed to the post.

China warns of potential floods in major rivers

BEIJING, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rains are expected to hit China in the next three days, likely pushing water levels in some rivers above warning levels, the Ministry of Water Resources said Saturday.

From Saturday to Monday, downpours will hit the north and northwest parts of the country as well as the regions along the Yellow and Huaihe rivers, with torrential rains expected in parts of central China's Henan Province, the ministry said.

Philippines' Duterte orders payment of healthcare workers' benefits

Suicide bomb attack in Pakistan kills two children, injures Chinese national

SHANGHAI, Aug 21 (Reuters) - A suicide bomb attack in Pakistan on a motorcade carrying Chinese personnel injured one Chinese national and killed two local children, the Chinese embassy in Islamabad said on Saturday.

"The Chinese embassy in Pakistan strongly condemns this act of terrorism, extends its sincere sympathies to the injured of both countries, and expresses its deep condolences to the innocent victims in Pakistan," it said in a statement.
