China: New Development Bank announces $1.5 bln three-year COVID response bond issue

SHANGHAI, June 17. /TASS/: BRICS’ New Development Bank (NDB) priced its inaugural benchmark $1.5 bln three-year COVID Response Bond in international capital markets on June 16, press service of the financial institution reported on Wednesday.

Beijing cancels hundreds of flights, trains as COVID-19 cases spike

Beijing, Jun 17 (PTI) Beijing moved on a war footing on Wednesday, cancelling hundreds of domestic flights and trains while ramping up the mass testing of 90,000 people to stem the spread of the coronavirus, as the city reported 31 new COVID-19 cases, pushing the tally to 137.

Two airports in Beijing have cancelled 1,255 domestic flights, nearly 70 per cent of the scheduled trips, the official media reported. Beijing currently does not operate international flights.

Kyrgyzstan’s Majority Coalition Nominates Kubatbek Boronov For PM

BISHKEK, June 17 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Kyrgyzstan’s ruling coalition, on Tuesday, nominated Kubatbek Boronov, for the post of prime minister, after his predecessor Mukhammedkalyi Abylgaziev resigned, on Monday, following allegations of corruption.

Speaking in parliament, Boronov said that, the new government would be “technical” and work until the formation of a new parliament.

He said, his cabinet would focus efforts on tackling the spread of COVID-19, and preparing for the parliamentary elections, scheduled for Oct 4.

Indonesia To Reopen Schools Under Tight Health Protocols

JAKARTA, June 17 (NNN-ANTARA) – Students in Indonesia will get back to schools, located in low-risk areas, under tight health protocols, after the closure of education facilities for months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Indonesian Education Minister, Nadiem Makarim, said, senior high schools and junior high schools will be reopened gradually, starting next month, while elementary schools and kindergartens will resume schooling activities in Sept and Nov respectively, media reported.

S. Korean Unification Minister offers to resign over worsening ties with N.Korea

SEOUL, June 17 (NNN-YONHAP) — Unification Minister Kim Yeon-chul said Wednesday that he has offered to resign to take responsibility for failing to stably manage inter-Korean relations, Yonhap news agency reported.

Kim said that he expressed his intent to resign to the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae earlier in the day.

“I feel sorry for failing to live up to the demands and expectations of our people for peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula,” Kim told reporters during a hastily arranged briefing.

Oil slumps as U.S. crude stocks build amid virus resurgence fears

SEOUL (Reuters) - Oil prices fell on Wednesday as data showed an increase in U.S. crude and fuel inventories, raising the prospect of oversupply as a potential second wave of the coronavirus pandemic threatened to halt any recovery of demand.

Brent crude LCOc1 futures were down 89 cents, or 2.2%, at $40.07 a barrel as of 0348 GMT, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) CLc1 futures fell $1.13, or 2.9%, to $37.25 a barrel.

Group of 86 NGOs issue letter calling for scrapping of planned Hong Kong security law

HONG KONG (Reuters) - A group of 86 non-government organisations issued a joint letter on Wednesday asking Chinese authorities to scrap plans to introduce national security legislation in Hong Kong, saying it threatens basic rights and freedoms.

The letter, signed by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Freedom House, among others, was addressed to Li Zhanshu, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, China’s top legislative body.

Japan's central bank expands support for virus-hit companies amid "severe" economic outlook

TOKYO, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Bank of Japan (BOJ) Governor Haruhiko Kuroda on Tuesday said that amid the harsh virus-induced financial environment, the bank stood poised to unroll further easing measures as necessary, although conceded that Japan's economic situation and outlook remained severe.

"We won't hesitate to take additional easing steps as needed. That means we are ready to expand our lending facilities if necessary," Kuroda told a press conference after the conclusion of the BOJ's policy setting meeting.

Beijing ups COVID-19 emergency response

BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Beijing upgraded its emergency response to COVID-19 from level III to II starting Tuesday, a local official announced.

Classes are moved online for primary and middle school students, and class resumption of college students will be suspended, said Chen Bei, deputy secretary-general of the Beijing municipal government, at a press conference.
