Asia stocks lower after Wall Street gains on recovery hopes

BEIJING (AP) — Major Asian stock markets declined Wednesday after Wall Street gained on hopes for a global economic recovery and Japan’s exports sank.

Market benchmarks in Shanghai, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Seoul retreated.

On Wall Street, the benchmark S&P 500 index rose for a third day, gaining 1.9% after U.S. retail spending was stronger than expected.

Report: 60% of Beijing flights canceled to stem virus spread

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese media say more than 60% of commercial flights in and out of Beijing have been canceled as the city raises alert level amid a new coronavirus outbreak.

The website of the Communist Party’s Global Times said that as of 9 a.m. Wednesday, a total of 1,255 flights to and from the capital’s two major airports have been scrapped.

That accounts for 67% of outgoing flights and 68% of incoming flights, the Global Times said.

N. Korea’s military to reenter inter-Korea cooperation sites

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea said Wednesday it will redeploy troops to now-shuttered inter-Korean cooperation sites, reinstall guard posts and resume military exercises at front-line areas, nullifying the landmark tension-reducing deals reached with South Korea just two years ago.

American wanted by FBI arrested in Indonesia for suspected child sex crimes

JAKARTA (Reuters) - A U.S. national wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation over a bitcoin scam has been arrested in Indonesia and charged under a child protection law for suspected sex crimes, Indonesian police said on Tuesday.

Russ Albert Medlin was arrested at his residence in Jakarta on Monday after police questioned three minors, and he was suspected of sex crimes, Jakarta police spokesman Yusri Yunus told a streamed news conference.

Singapore To Enter Phase Two Of Re-Opening With More Activities Resumed

SINGAPORE, June 16 (NNN-CNA) – Singapore’s Multi-Ministry Task-force decided to start phase two of re-opening, after 11:59 p.m. June 18, when most activities, apart from a small list of exceptions, will be resumed.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) announced that, subject to some safe distancing principles, retail businesses might re-open their physical outlets in the new phase, while food and beverage dine-in would be allowed, personal health and wellness and home-based services would be resumed, and sports, parks and other public facilities would open.

North Korea blows up inter-Korean office in Kaesong

SEOUL, June 16 (NNN-BERNAMA) — A report from South Korea’s news agency Yonhap said that North Korea blew up the inter-Korean joint liaison office in its border town of Kaesong on Tuesday.

This sharply escalates tensions on the Korean Peninsula after near-daily threats to punish Seoul over anti-Pyongyang propaganda leaflets, the report said.

The North exploded the liaison office at 2:49 p.m., the unification ministry saying.

Earlier, military sources said that smoke was seen and an explosion was heard from the border town.

Kenya confident of Malaysia’s support of its UNSC candidacy – Envoy

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Malaysia has given positive consideration to Kenya’s candidature for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2021-22 term, says Kenya’s High Commissioner to Malaysia, Francis Ndegwa Muhoro.

Muhoro said Malaysia and the East African country enjoys friendly and cordial relations dating back to the pre-independence times, and “given this great relationship, Kenya strongly believes that Malaysia’s vote is guaranteed.”

Beijing expands COVID-19 daily testing capacity to 90,000 to contain new infections

BEIJING, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Beijing is conducting extensive COVID-19 screening, with its daily testing capacity reaching over 90,000 samples, as the Chinese capital works to stem new indigenous cases that have emerged in the past few days.

The city reported 79 confirmed domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases from June 11 to 14, most of which were related to the now-closed Xinfadi market, a large wholesale market of fruit, vegetable, and meat in Beijing's Fengtai District, according to the local health commission.

NKorea’s military threatens to reenter demilitarized areas

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea’s military on Tuesday threatened to move back into zones that were demilitarized under inter-Korean peace agreements as the country continued to dial up pressure on rival South Korea amid stalled nuclear negotiations with the Trump administration.
