HK's Cathay Pacific proposes USD 5 billion bailout led by government

Hong Kong, Jun 9 (AP) Financially battered Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific Airways has proposed the government help fund a 39 billion Hong Kong dollar (USD 5 billion) recapitalization plan to help it survive the coronavirus pandemic.



Cathay Pacific said in a stock exchange filing on Tuesday that the plan calls for it to issue shares to raise more than 33 billion Hong Kong dollars (over USD 4.3 billion).

Malaysia: KL stock exchange sees better performance

KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 (NNN-BERNAMA) — The Kuala Lumpur stock exchange, Bursa Malaysia ended the morning session higher on persistent buying activities across the board, taking the cue from the higher overnight performance of Wall Street as hopes of an economic recovery soar following the easing in COVID-19 lockdowns.

At 12.30 pm, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 23.29 points to 1,579.62 last Friday’s close of 1,556.33.

The index opened 16.47 points higher at 1,572.80 and hovered between 1,572.80 and 1,590.83  throughout the early trading session.

Singapore’s Corona Tally Stands At 38,514 With 218 New Cases

SINGAPORE, June 9 (Bernama) — Singapore has reported 218 new cases of COVID-19 as at noon Tuesday, with the majority still involving foreign workers at dormitories, thus raising the tally to 38,514.

Of the 218 cases, only six were from the community and all are work pass holders, said the republic’s Ministry of Health (MOH) in a statement here.

There were no new cases involving Singaporeans or permanent residents, it said.

Indonesia: Tourist rescued after being trapped 6 days in well in Bali

DENPASAR, Indonesia (AP) — A Ukrainian man who fell into an abandoned well and broke his leg while being chased by a wild dog on Indonesia’s tourist island of Bali was rescued after being trapped for nearly a week, police said Monday.

Roberts Jacob Matthews, 29, stumbled into the nearly empty 4-meter (13-foot) -deep concrete well and was unable to get out for six days until a farmer in Pecatu village heard his weak voice asking for help on Saturday, police said.

Asian shares mixed after Nasdaq record as Wall St rallies on

TOKYO (AP) — Shares were mixed in Asia on Tuesday after the Nasdaq composite touched a fresh record as enthusiasm about reopening the economy pushed Wall Street still higher.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 lost 0.5% to 23,064.75 and South Korea’s Kospi dipped 0.3% to 2,178.58. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng jumped 1.3% to 25,105.75, while the Shanghai Composite index gained 0.3% to 2,946.10.

N. Korea says it will cut communication channels with South

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea said it will cut off all communication channels with South Korea at noon Tuesday as it escalates its pressure on the South for failing to stop activists from floating anti-Pyongyang leaflets across their tense border.

South Korea’s liberal government, which espouses greater ties with North Korea, repeated that it will work toward restoring peace on the Korean Peninsula in its response to the warning.
