China asks United States to stop 'unreasonable suppression' of Huawei

BEIJING/HONG KONG (Reuters) - China’s foreign ministry said on Saturday the United States needed to stop the “unreasonable suppression” of Chinese companies like Huawei.

The Trump administration on Friday moved to block global chip supplies to blacklisted telecoms equipment giant Huawei Technologies, spurring fears of Chinese retaliation and hammering shares of U.S. producers of chipmaking equipment.

Crowds at Wuhan clinics fear coronavirus testing could rekindle disease

WUHAN, China (Reuters) - As Wuhan, the Chinese city where the COVID-19 pandemic began, revs up a massive testing campaign, some residents crowding the test centres expressed concern on Saturday that the very act of getting tested could expose them to the coronavirus.

Safety has become a hot topic on social media groups among the 11 million residents of Wuhan, people told Reuters as they converged on open-air test sites at clinics and other facilities. Many said, though, that they support the voluntary campaign.

Cambodia says all COVID-19 patients recovered, no new cases for a month

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - Cambodia’s last patient with the new coronavirus has recovered and left hospital, leaving the Southeast Asian country with zero cases, the health ministry said on Saturday, while urging continued vigilance.

No easing of restrictions related to the virus - including school closures and border entry checks and quarantines - were included in the Ministry of Health statement.

Malaysia, China committed to boost present defence ties

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Malaysia and China are committed to further enhancing existing defence co-operation between the two countries.

The Ministry of Defence said, in a statement today, that the co-operation commitment was announced by the Minister of Defence Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob after receiving a phone call from the Chinese Minister of Defence Wei Fenghe at 4 pm today.

“Ismail Sabri and his counterpart also discussed regional and international security challenges of mutual interest, including the South China Sea,” it said.

Thailand’s Inter-Provincial Buses Back On Road After Easing Of Lock-down

BANGKOK, May 16 (NNN-TNA) – Thailand’s Ministry of Transport said on Friday that, state-run buses will resume cross-country services between Bangkok and the North and Northeast on May 18, a day after the Phase Two lock-down restrictions are eased.

Inter-provincial buses were suspended in mid-Apr to curb the COVID-19 outbreak.

Services to the South will start on June 1.

Meanwhile, the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) said, the number of its passengers will increase by 100,000 a day, when shopping centres reopen on May 17.

Japan should be prepared for long battle against coronavirus: Abe

TOKYO, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Friday the nation should be prepared for a long battle against the coronavirus pandemic, warning that the virus still remained a significant threat and preventative measures should be maintained.

The Japanese leader said that even though the state of emergency had been lifted for the majority of prefectures, the virus will remain a threat until a vaccine is developed and people should be prepared for further waves of the virus and the possibility of a long battle ahead.

COVID-19 Pandemic: China to never forget Pakistan’s support in critical moment: Spokesperson

BEIJING, May 15 (APP): A Chinese foreign ministry’s spokesperson on Friday highly praised a resolution unanimously passed by the Senate of Pakistan and said that China would never forget Pakistan’s support and medical supplies in a critical moment in its fight against COVID-19.

“China appreciates the relevant resolution. Since the start of the outbreak, China and Pakistan have supported and worked closely with each other to jointly fight the virus. We will never forget that,” Zhao Lijian said while responding to a question asked by APP during his regular briefing held here.

China has no intention of engaging in arms control talks — Foreign Ministry

Virus could cut up to 9.7 percent off global economy: ADB

15 May 2020; AFP: The coronavirus pandemic could cut up to 9.7 percent off the global economy, the Asian Development Bank said Friday, doubling its previous estimate as the virus stifles trade and leaves millions jobless.

The estimated impact would cost as much as $8.8 trillion based on a range of scenarios, but ADB said government interventions could help offset the losses inflicted by the crisis.
