Ghosn’s Japan lawyer quits after client’s flight to Lebanon

TOKYO (AP) — One of the Japanese lawyers for former Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn has stepped down from that job after Ghosn fled the country.

Junichiro Hironaka had been representing Ghosn in his defense against various financial misconduct allegations. His move, announced Thursday, was widely expected after Ghosn fled to Lebanon late last month.

Hong Kong leader says special status can endure beyond 2047

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong’s leader Carrie Lam says the ″one country, two systems″ framework under which the city enjoys freedoms unknown in China could continue after 2047 deadline if loyalty to Beijing is upheld.

Lam’s comments Thursday at the Legislative Council appeared to be an appeal to those in the city who see Beijing as tightening its control over the semi-autonomous territory’s civic, economic and political life.

Nothing to be gained from war – Mahathir

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 14 (NNN-BERNAMA)  — Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said nothing can be gained from war just like what was shown by America’s involvement in the Vietnam War.

He noted that being the world’s most powerful military power today, America has the capacity to wipe off the whole of humanity if it chooses to do so, but the Americans must remember the outcome of the Vietnam War.

Dr Mahathir said the great power, employing all its military might, all its technology and huge sums of money was defeated by the Vietnamese.

Saudi Arabia presents compensation to families of Makkah crane collapse victims

PUTRAJAYA, Jan 15 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Saudi Arabia on Tuesday presented compensation to the families of seven Malaysian pilgrims who were killed when a crane collapsed onto the Grand Mosque in Makkah during the 2015 haj season.

The compensation of SAR 1 million (equivalent to RM1.17 million) for each family of the victims is a personal contribution from King Salman Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Apart from the families of the deceased victims, three Malaysian haj pilgrims who were injured in the incident also received compensation of SAR500,000 (RM587,574) each.

Chinese, Vietnamese officials promise to boost relations

HANOI, Jan 15 (NNN-XINHUA) – Song Tao, head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, stressed to promote the development of China-Vietnam relations in the new era.

Song made the remarks during his visit to Vietnam, ahead of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Vietnam.

China-Vietnam ties are essentially the relations between two socialist countries under the leadership of communist parties, Song said.

China has never been a currency manipulator: spokesperson

BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- China has never been a currency manipulator, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Tuesday, adding the United States' dropping its designation of China as a currency manipulator was in line with the facts and international consensus.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang made the remarks at a press briefing when answering a question regarding the United States on Monday removing the currency manipulator label it imposed on China last summer.

China trade surplus with US dropped 8.5 per cent to USD 296 bn in 2019

Beijing, Jan 14 (AFP/PTI) China's trade surplus with the United States narrowed last year as the world's two biggest economies exchanged punitive tariffs in a bruising trade war, official data showed Tuesday.

The figures were released just a day before the US and China are expected to sign a "phase one" agreement that marks a de-escalation in their two-year conflict.

China's 2019 trade surplus with U.S. narrows to $295.8 billion vs $323.3 billion in 2018

BEIJING (Reuters) - China’s trade surplus with the United States for December stood at $23.18 billion, Reuters calculation based on Chinese customs data showed on Tuesday, narrowing slightly from the $24.6 billion surplus posted for November.

For the full year, China posted a $295.8 billion trade surplus with the United States, down from $323.33 billion in 2018, according to Reuters calculations.

Customs said China’s total trade with the United States fell 14.6% in 2019, with exports dropping 12.5% and imports slipping 20.9%.
