Iran’s President to meet Japan PM amid tension with US

TOKYO, Dec 20 (NNN-AGENCIES) — President Hassan Rouhani will make the first visit to Japan by an Iranian head of state for two decades on Friday, as Tokyo seeks to mediate between Tehran and Washington amid spiralling nuclear tensions.

The trip comes after violent protests last month over petroleum price hikes in Iran, as Washington-imposed sanctions over its nuclear programme hit the Iranian economy.

The United States re-imposed crippling sanctions on Iran in 2018 after withdrawing from an international deal aimed at tackling the Islamic Republic’s nuclear programme.

Ankara-KL can strengthen cooperation in Islamic finance, says Erdogan

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 20 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan believes Ankara and Kuala Lumpur can enhance their cooperation in the Islamic finance sector for mutual benefits.

“We (Turkey) have to take Islamic finance on our agenda, make it a priority. We believe Malaysia has the advantage as a pioneer in Islamic finance and resources. So we can collaborate between our banks, private players…we have the models, such as Sukuk,” he said Thursday.

China-Brazil satellite launched into space to monitor Amazon rainforest

BEIJING (Reuters) - An Earth observation satellite jointly developed by China and Brazil was launched into space on Friday under a bilateral programme seen as a template for broader cooperation among BRICS nations.

The China-Brazil Earth Resource Satellite-4A was launched on a Long March-4B rocket in the northern Chinese province of Shanxi, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

China urges U.S., North Korea to resume talks as tensions escalate

BEIJING (Reuters) - China on Thursday urged the United States and North Korea to resume dialogue and work to resolve disagreements as soon as possible amid renewed tensions between Washington and Pyongyang over the latter’s nuclear and missiles programs.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Luo Zhaohui and U.S. special envoy for North Korea Stephen Biegun met in the Chinese capital on Thursday and exchanged views on achieving denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula in stages, China’s foreign ministry said.

China says Canada's attempt to link U.S. trade matter with other issues doomed to fail

BEIJING (Reuters) - China’s foreign ministry said on Friday Canada’s attempt to link Sino-U.S. trade matters with other issues is doomed to fail.

Geng Shuang, spokesman at the ministry, made the comment at a regular media briefing when asked about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s latest remarks on China-U.S. trade talks.

Trudeau said on Thursday that the U.S. government should not finalize a trade deal with China unless the pact also secured the release of two Canadians detained by Beijing.

Iran’s Rouhani to visit Japan in hope of easing nuke impasse

TOKYO (AP) — Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is visiting Tokyo to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday, in hopes of easing a nuclear impasse between Tehran and Washington and reduce tensions in the Middle East.

The visit is the first by an Iranian president in 19 years and comes just before Japan is expected to announce a plan to deploy its troops to the region to ensure the safety of Japanese vessels transporting oil.

Japan is keen to restore stability in the Middle East, the source of more than 80% of Japan’s oil.

Asian shares mixed as US says trade deal with China ready

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares meandered in a narrow range on Friday despite another session of record highs on Wall Street.

There was little apparent reaction Friday after U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that a preliminary trade deal with China was ready for signing in early January. Mnuchin told CNBC that he was “very confident” the deal would help rebalance trade and open Chinese markets to more American products and services.

Tokyo Olympics say costs $12.6B; Audit report says much more

TOKYO (AP) — Tokyo Olympic organizers said Friday they are spending 1.35 trillion Japanese yen — about $12.6 billion — to stage next year’s games. Organizers said the expenditure is unchanged from a year ago, although robust sponsorship and ticket sales have generated a contingency fund of an extra $30 million.

However, Japan’s National Audit Board, in a 177-page report prepared for the national legislature, said next year’s Olympics will cost much more than organizers say.
