Thailand unveils 'relocation package' to draw firms hit by trade war

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand announced a relocation package on Friday to attract foreign companies looking to moved production due to intensifying Sino-U.S. trade tensions, seeking to compete with Vietnam to lure manufacturers hit by tariffs.

The Thai government seeks to boost Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy which grew at its weakest annual pace in nearly five years in the second quarter as exports tumbled.

Indonesia restoring internet access in Papua gradually

JAKARTA, Sept 6 (NNN-XINHUA) — The Indonesian government has lifted an internet blackout imposed after riots in Papua and West Papua provinces that killed three people and injured scores of others, Xinhua news agency reported, quoting a government statement.

“The government has gradually revoking restriction on internet services in Papua and West Papua provinces,” the statement issued by the ministry of information and communication said.

Typhoon Lingling expected to hit S.Korea by early Saturday

SEOUL, Sept 6 (NNN-YONHAP) — A powerful typhoon is quickly moving upward to South Korea, with strong winds and heavy rain expected to pound the country soon, Yonhap news agency reported, quoting South Korea’s weather agency on Friday.

Typhoon Lingling, this year’s 13th typhoon, passed seas northwest of Okinawa, Japan, at a speed of 20-30 kph at 7 am, according to the Korea Meteorological Association.

The weather agency warned that the wind speed may peak at 55 meters per second, or 200 kph, in some island areas.

Germany’s Merkel faces balancing act in Beijing

BEIJING (AP) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived Friday in Beijing, where she faces the challenge of balancing human rights concerns and economic discussions with one of Germany’s largest trading partners.

Merkel is meeting this morning with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and will dine with President Xi Jinping in the evening.

Asian shares rise on optimism over more US-China trade talks

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares rose Friday as investors cheered plans for more trade negotiations between Washington and Beijing and drew encouragement from positive data about the U.S. economy.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 gained nearly 0.7% in morning trading to 21,222.86. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.5% to 6,647.80. South Korea’s Kospi edged up 0.3% to 2,010.15. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 0.6% to 26,661.47, while the Shanghai Composite inched up nearly 0.1% to 2,987.94.

Utah woman arrested at Manila airport with newborn in bag

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — An American woman who attempted to carry a 6-day-old baby out of the Philippines hidden inside a sling bag has been arrested at Manila’s airport and charged with human trafficking, officials said Thursday.

The Philippine officials said Jennifer Erin Talbot was able to pass through the airport immigration counter on Wednesday without declaring the baby boy but was intercepted at the boarding gate by airline personnel.

Talbot was unable to produce any passport, boarding pass or government permits for the baby, airport officials said.

Shanghai Cooperation Organization stands against trade wars — secretary general

BEIJING, September 5. /TASS/: The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) stands against trade wars and sanctions, SCO Secretary General Vladimir Norov told reporters on Thursday.

"We are against trade wars, this contradicts the peaceful nature of our organization. SCO activity is not aimed against any particular state or international organization," Norov said. There are no trade wars or sanctions between SCO states, he added.

Terrorists won't find refuge on SCO soil, says secretary general

BEIJING, September 5. /TASS/: Terrorist activity on the territory of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s (SCO) member states has decreased, which confirms the success of practical efforts on enhancing counterterrorism mechanisms, SCO Secretary General Vladimir Norov told reporters on Thursday.

"Practical efforts on improving counterterrorism efforts are continuing on a regular basis," he noted. "We can judge their success by the reduction in terrorist activity of extremist groups on the territory of our countries."

Chinese paper says HK demonstrators now have no excuse for violence

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam’s withdrawal of a controversial extradition bill that had sparked widespread protests was an olive branch that leaves demonstrators with no excuse to continue violence, the official China Daily said on Thursday.

The withdrawal of the bill on Wednesday came after weeks of protests that had sometimes turned into pitched battles across the former British colony of more than 7 million people. More than 1,000 protesters have been arrested.

Global shares mostly rise amid optimism on Hong Kong, Brexit

TOKYO (AP) — Global shares were mostly higher Thursday amid encouraging developments, including British lawmakers seeking a less chaotic exit from the European Union and the potential easing of political tensions in Hong Kong.

France’s CAC 40 rose 0.7% in early trading to 5,572.27, while Germany’s DAX also gained 0.7% to 12,111.88. Britain’s FTSE 100 inched down 0.3% to 7,286.26. U.S. shares were set to drift higher with Dow futures rising 0.7% to 26,566. S&P 500 futures were also higher, rising 0.6% to 2,957.10.
