Asian shares climb after US benchmarks hit record highs

TOKYO (AP) — Shares opened higher in Asia on Thursday, tracking the ascent by major U.S. indexes to record highs.

The rally follows a slight easing of trade tensions between the U.S. and China after they agreed to refrain from new tariffs pending a new round of negotiations. That has relieved some pressure on markets, though the trade war still overshadows the global economic outlook.

Tornado in northeast China kills 6 people, injures 190

BEIJING (AP) — A tornado blew through a city in northeast China, damaging factories and buildings, killing six people and injuring another 190, state media reported Thursday.

The tornado hit Kaiyuan, a county-level city in Liaoning province, late Wednesday afternoon, local authorities said in a brief online statement. Footage from state broadcaster CCTV showed a stretch of collapsed low-rise buildings where firefighters were working through the debris. Glass windows in homes and cars were blown out.

Arrests in Hong Kong raise fears of more violent protests

HONG KONG (AP) — A Hong Kong pro-democracy lawmaker expressed fears Thursday that the situation could worsen after police announced the arrests of more than a dozen people following protests earlier this week.

Legislative Council member Claudia Mo called on people to understand the frustration and anger of the mostly youthful protesters, even if they have technically broken the law.

“I am terribly worried that a massive kind of round-up of protesters could trigger very negative sentiment on the part of the young,” she told reporters. “Things could get worse.”

Malaysian ´Flying car´ prototype to be unveiled as early as October

KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 (NNN-Bernama) — The first prototype of air mobility is expected to be launched as early as October, said Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof.

He said the development of the prototype involved several private companies and does not involve government spending.

“The air mobility industry is among the new entrepreneurship areas which have been identified to have high potential in the local and international markets, particularly in the infrastructure, security and agriculture sectors.

Asian shares mostly lower after fresh S&P 500 record high

TOKYO (AP) — Shares were mostly lower in Asia on Wednesday as the euphoria from President Donald Trump’s truce with China’s Xi Jinping on trade faded.

The retreat followed yet another all-time high for the S&P 500 index, though trading in U.S. markets has been subdued ahead of an early closure on Wednesday for the July 4 holiday.

Scientists discover highest energy cosmic gamma rays in Tibet

BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- A joint research team made up of Chinese and Japanese scientists has discovered the highest energy cosmic gamma rays ever observed from an observatory in Tibet, opening a new window to explore the extreme universe.

The energy of the gamma rays is as high as 450 TeV, equivalent to 45 billion times of the energy of X-rays for medical diagnosis, researchers from the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences said at a press conference on Wednesday.

600,000 people ordered to evacuate in SW Japan due to torrential rain

TOKYO, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Around 600,000 people have been ordered to evacuate in the city of Kagoshima in Japan's southwest, public broadcaster NHK said here Wednesday.

The evacuation order came as torrential rain continues to pummel southwest Japan, with Kyushu Island, which comprises Kagoshima City, the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture, one of the hardest-hit regions.

Xi urged Trump to ease North Korea sanctions in 'timely' fashion

2 July 2019; AFP: Chinese President Xi Jinping urged US President Donald Trump to "show flexibility" towards North Korea, including the "timely" easing of sanctions, at the G20 summit last week, China's foreign minister said Tuesday.

Xi visited North Korea prior to meeting Trump at the G20 in Japan on Saturday, and analysts had said the Chinese leader could use the trip as leverage in his trade war talks with the US leader.
