Covid-19: Number of cases across globe up by over 355,000 in past day – WHO

GENEVA, Feb 6 (NNN-AGENCIES) — More than 355,000 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection were registered worldwide in the past day, with the overall number of such cases exceeding 104.37 million, the World Health Organization (WHO) said in its daily bulletin.

As of Feb 5, as many as 104,370,550 novel coronavirus cases and 2,2271,180 coronavirus-associated deaths were registered across the globe. The number of confirmed cases grew by 355,041 in the past 24 hours and the number of fatalities increased by 10,422.

Biden to pursue arms control, seeks to engage China, U.S. envoy says

GENEVA (Reuters) - The Biden administration views the New Start Treaty clinched with Russia this week as the beginning of engagement on strategic issues including multilateral arms control, a U.S. envoy said on Thursday.

Robert Wood, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, called in a speech to the U.N.-sponsored Conference on Disarmament for a new arms control drive that “covers more weapons, and eventually more countries”.

As of 20:43 Moscow time on January 29, as many as 101,053,721 novel coronavirus cases and 2,182,867 coronavirus-associated deaths were registered across the globe. The number of confirmed cases grew by 570,976 in the past 24 hours and the number of fatalities increased by 15,716.

Switzerland: Bilateral vaccine deals putting WHO-led COVAX at risk: Tedros

GENEVA, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Tuesday that bilateral deals on COVID-19 vaccines between countries and companies are putting at risk the promise of COVAX, the WHO-led global initiative aimed to ensure rapid and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines.

"At least 56 bilateral vaccine deals have been signed, which fragments the market, forces countries to compete, and drives up prices of COVID-19 vaccines," said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in his speech at a meeting.

GENEVA, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- The number of COVID-19 cases worldwide is expected to reach 100 million within this week, said the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

"A year ago today, fewer than 1,500 cases of COVID-19 had been reported to WHO, including just 23 cases outside China. This week, we expect to reach 100 million reported cases," Tedros said at a WHO press briefing on Monday.

Covid-19: UK strain detected in at least 60 countries – WHO

GENEVA, Jan 20 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The UK coronavirus strain has been detected in at least 60 countries, the World Health Organization said Wednesday, 10 more than a week ago.

With the global death toll now well past two million, and new variants of the virus causing deep concern, countries across the world are grappling with how to slow infections until vaccines become widely available.

The South African strain, which like the UK one is believed to be more infectious, has now been reported in 23 countries and territories, the WHO also announced in its weekly update.

Nearly 60,000 have fled Central African Republic violence: U.N

GENEVA (Reuters) - The number of people fleeing violence in the Central African Republic has doubled in just a week to nearly 60,000, the U.N. refugee agency said on Friday.

Intensifying violence since a Dec. 27 presidential vote is responsible for the sharp increase in refugees, the UNHCR said, adding that most had fled to the Democratic Republic of Congo across the Ubangui River.
