Ukraine leader pledges push for victory on war anniversary

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine’s leader pledged to push for victory in 2023 as he and other Ukrainians on Friday marked the somber anniversary of the Russian invasion that upended their lives and Europe’s security.

It was Ukraine’s “longest day,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, but the country’s dogged resistance a year on has proven that “every tomorrow is worth fighting for.”

Ukraine defends front line, Putin talks up nuclear arsenal on war anniversary eve

KYIV, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Ukraine said its forces had repelled Russian assaults along the length of the front line on Thursday on the eve of the war's anniversary, as President Vladimir Putin, empty-handed after a bloody winter offensive, talked up Russia's nuclear arsenal.

After a series of strident speeches in the runup to the anniversary of his invasion, Putin announced plans on Thursday to deploy new Sarmat multi-warhead intercontinental ballistic missiles this year. Earlier this week he suspended Russia's participation in the START nuclear arms control treaty.

Ukraine: Biden promises new military aid for Kyiv during 'historic' visit

KYIV, Feb 20 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden promised new military aid for Ukraine worth $500 million during a surprise visit to Kyiv on Monday, almost a year to the day since Russia's invasion.

In a trip showing solidarity with Kyiv, Biden also said additional sanctions would be announced this week against the Russian elite and companies trying to evade sanctions to "back the Russian war machine".

Ukrainian military deals massive blow to Donetsk city center

DONETSK, February 19. /TASS/:  Ukrainian troops launched a massive attack on the Donetsk city center on Sunday afternoon, hitting residential apartment buildings and civilian infrastructure facilities. According to preliminary reports, there are wounded.

"There are wounded, according to preliminary data. We are clarifying the information," the administration of Donetsk's central Voroshilovsky district told TASS.

NATO allies weigh more arms for Ukraine as Russian artillery batters Bakhmut

KYIV, Feb 14 (Reuters) - Russian forces bombarded Ukrainian troops and towns along front lines in the eastern Donetsk region on Tuesday in what appeared to be early salvoes of a new offensive as Western allies met in Brussels to discuss sending more arms to the Kyiv government.

Bakhmut, a city in Donetsk province and a principal target for Russian President Vladimir Putin's invading army, was in a precarious position.

Russian forces bombard Ukraine's Bakhmut as defenders brace for assault

KYIV, Feb 13 (Reuters) - The city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine was coming heavy Russian artillery fire on Monday as Ukrainian forces there braced for possible ground attacks, Ukrainian military officials said.

Positions in Bakhmut have been fortified and only people with a military role were being allowed in, a deputy battalion commander said. Any civilians who still wanted to leave the city would have to brave the incoming fire, he said.
