Erdogan urges Russia not to invade Ukraine

20 Jan 2022; MEMO: Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, warns Russia against invading Ukraine, calling the former Soviet republic a "powerful" country with international friends, AFP reports.

According to the report, speaking to Turkish reporters in Albania, Erdogan said he intended to discuss the rising tensions with Russian President, Vladimir Putin.

Turkiye to send 700 tons of aid to Afghanistan on 'charity train'

20 Jan 2022; MEMO: The Turkish President announced on Wednesday that the country would be sending a "charity train" to Afghanistan carrying emergency goods, Anadolu News Agency reports.

Speaking after a Cabinet meeting in the capital, Ankara, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the train, carrying 700 tons of food, clothing and health and emergency goods are to be sent with the support of 10 non-governmental organisations under the coordination of Turkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency.

Turkey issues arrest warrant for 19 suspects over failed coup in 2016

ANKARA, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Turkey on Friday issued an arrest warrant for 19 suspected former police chiefs over their alleged links to a network accused of orchestrating a coup attempt in 2016, the capital Ankara chief prosecutor's office said.

The operation has been carried out in 12 provinces as part of an investigation against the "Gulen movement," which the Turkish government accuses of infiltrating into the state bureaucracy and then attempting a coup on July 15, 2016.

International Turkish footballer, Ahmet Calik, 27, killed following a crash

11 Jan 2022; MEMO: A Turkish international footballer has been killed at the age of 27 in a motorway crash in the capital city of Ankara, local media reports.

According to the report, Ahmet Calik, who played eight times for the Turkish national team, was alone in his vehicle when the horror crash took place.

He is reported to have been driving on the Ankara-Nigde motorway when he lost control of his car before it overturned into a roadside ditch at around 9 am, local time.

Turkey detains at least 113 suspects over failed coup in 2016

ANKARA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Turkey on Tuesday detained at least 113 suspects over their alleged links to a network accused of orchestrating a coup attempt in 2016.

A detention warrant was issued for 185 suspects across 40 cities as part of an investigation into the Gulen Movement's influence on the Turkish armed forces, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

The suspects were accused of infiltrating into the state bureaucracy and then attempting a coup on July 15, 2016.

Turkey Registers Record Daily COVID-19 Cases As Omicron Spreads

ANKARA, Jan 7 (NNN-ANADOLU) – Turkey yesterday reported, 68,413 new COVID-19 cases, the highest daily figure since the outbreak, raising its tally to 9,787,274, according to its health ministry.

The number of daily cases in the country has about doubled since early Jan, as the Omicron variant rapidly increases.

The death toll from the virus rose by 156 to 83,231, while 25,502 more people recovered in the last 24 hours.

A total of 418,823 tests were conducted over the past day, the ministry said.

Turkish weapons proved their effectiveness in the field: DM

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony of a new facility for a national fighter development project in Ankara, Akar said these projects will enhance the continuous localisation plan in the technological, defence and security fields, and will raise Turkey's position in the technologies field.

Turkish lira dips, business group chief questions policy

ISTANBUL, Jan 6 (Reuters) - Turkey's lira slipped as much as 1.7% on Thursday, and has shed some 22% in the last nine trading sessions, on persisting investor concerns about a surge in inflation to a 19-year high after a series of unorthodox interest rate cuts.

The currency weakened to 13.89 against the dollar, before trimming its losses to 13.745 by 0800 GMT. Last year it slumped 44% in its worst year since President Tayyip Erdogan's AK Party came to power in 2002.
