Turkey hunts 54 military personnel over failed coup

ISTANBUL, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Turkish prosecutors on Tuesday ordered the detention of dozens of military personnel, including 31 soldiers in active service, over their alleged links to a network believed to be behind a coup attempt in 2016.

Police launched operations in 16 provinces across the country to capture the suspects, including eight soldiers in active service, upon the order of the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in Istanbul, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

Turkish president says will not bear burden of refugees alone

ANKARA, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- In case of an influx of refugees towards Turkish borders, Turkey will not take such a burden on its own, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said late on Sunday.

"More than 80,000 brothers from Idlib have started marching towards our border," he said during a speech in Istanbul, pointing out that Turkey will not bear the burden alone.

Erdogan says Turkey will increase military support to Libya if necessary

Turkey’s First National Submarine Taken Into Pool

ISTANBUL, Dec 23 (NNN-ANADOLU) – Turkey’s first home-made submarine was taken into pool, to continue its construction in the northwestern province of Kocaeli.

The building of TCG Piri Reis started four years ago, under the new-type submarine project of the Turkish Naval Forces, with a view to increasing the capabilities of the Turkish defence industry.

Turkey among top 10 countries for expats

20 Dec 2019; MEMO: Turkey has ranked seventh in the top ten countries in the world for expatriates to live and work in, according to a new survey conducted by the British transnational bank HSBC.

As part of the bank’s annual Expat Explorer Report of 2019, over 18,000 expats living in 163 countries were surveyed on their experiences of the political, cultural and economic conditions of the country they moved to.

Turkish delegation to visit Moscow for talks on Libya and Syria

ANKARA, December 18. /TASS/: A Turkish delegation will soon head to Russia to discuss with Russian colleagues the situation in Libya and Syria, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced, according to NTV channel.

"We [together with Russian President Vladimir Putin] have issued an order. Under it, the deputy foreign minister, the deputy national defense minister as well as representatives of the intelligence and national security will soon pay a visit to Moscow," the Turkish leader said. "We have agreed that Libya and Syria will be discussed."

Erdogan says world powers yet to pledge Syria 'safe zone' support: NTV

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said world powers have yet to pledge support for the country’s “safe zone” plans in northern Syria, where it intends to resettle one million Syrian refugees, broadcaster NTV reported on Wednesday.

“Not even the countries we regard as the most powerful and respected have come out yet in response to our call on the safe zone and said ‘we’re in’,” Erdogan told reporters in Geneva, where he attended the Global Forum on Refugees on Tuesday.

Erdogan says Turkey to boost cooperation with Libya: NTV

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey will improve its cooperation with Libya and is ready to provide military support for the Tripoli-based government or back joint steps in the eastern Mediterranean, broadcaster NTV cited President Tayyip Erdogan as saying on Wednesday.

Last month, Turkey and Libya’s internationally recognized government signed accords on maritime boundaries, which enraged Greece. Ankara says it may send troops to Libya, which has been divided into rival political factions since 2014, if the Tripoli-based government requests it.

$13 billion Canal Istanbul Project Divides Turks

ISTANBUL, Dec 18 (NNN-ANADOLU) – Discussions on the construction of an artificial waterway, which would divide Turkey’s most populous city Istanbul, have lately polarised the Turkish society over its environmental and financial impacts.

Canal Istanbul was first brought out by then Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in 2011, as a “crazy project” with a view to easing the heavy traffic of the 30-km-long Bosphorus Strait, one of the world’s busiest waterways that divides the Asian and European parts of Istanbul.
