South Korean named Interpol president in blow to Russia

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Interpol elected a South Korean as the organization’s president on Wednesday, edging out a veteran of Russia’s security services who was strongly opposed by the United States, Britain and other European nations.

Kim Jong Yang’s surprise election was seen as a victory for the White House and its European partners, who had lobbied up until the final hours before the vote against Alexander Prokopchuk’s bid to be named the policing organization’s next president.

UAE sentences British academic to life in prison for spying

LONDON (AP) — A British academic was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday in the United Arab Emirates on charges that he was spying for the U.K. — a verdict that Britain described as shocking as it urged its Mideast ally to reconsider the decision.

Matthew Hedges, a 31-year-old PhD student in Middle Eastern Studies at Durham University, was arrested at Dubai Airport on May 5 and has been held in detention since.

Saudi minister calls for 1 mln bpd global oil output cut

12 Nov 2018; AFP: Saudi Arabia's energy minister called Monday for a global output cut of one million barrels per day to re-balance the market, as Riyadh unveiled plans to cut production by 500,000 bpd from December.

"The technical analysis we reviewed yesterday shows that we need a reduction approaching one million bpd to balance the market," Khalid al-Falih told an energy conference in Abu Dhabi.

The proposed reduction is from October production levels, Falih said.

Major oil producers to consider cuts after price slide

11 Nov 2018; AFP: Major oil producers meet in Abu Dhabi on Sunday to consider reverting to output cuts after a sharp slide in crude prices revived fears of a 2014-style crash.

Oil prices shed a fifth of their value in just one month after surging to a four-year high in early October, driven by a combination of factors centred on higher supply and fears of sluggish demand.

Brent crude dropped below $70 a barrel on Friday for the first time since April while the New York's West Texas Intermediate (WTI) sank below $60 a barrel, a nine-month low.

Cricketer Imam's head injury overshadows Pakistan triumph

Abu Dhabi, Nov 10 (AFP) Pakistan beat New Zealand by six wickets in the second day-night international in Abu Dhabi on Friday but the match was overshadowed by a worrying injury to opening batsman Imam-ul-Haq who was taken to hospital after being hit on the head by a short ball.

Imam, on 16, was forced to retire after a short delivery from fast bowler Lockie Ferguson hit the grille of his helmet, making him dizzy before he fell to the ground.

His eyes were closed but he did not lose consciousness.

Dubai airport welcomes over 8 mln passengers in Aug

DUBAI, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Dubai International Airport has hosted over 8 million passengers in August, the second consecutive month that saw the number of passengers exceed 8 million, said the Dubai government's media office Wednesday.

On average, the busy civil aviation hub recorded an average monthly traffic of 7.5 million passengers. "That's 1.2 million more than its closest rival London Heathrow of 6.29 million," said the report.

Abu Dhabi named world's safest city by Numbeo

DUBAI, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Abu Dhabi has been named the safest city in the world for the second year by Numbeo, a website for crowd-sourced global data, Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism said Wednesday.

Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), surpassed more than 300 cities across the world, including Tokyo, Japan, Basel, Munich, and Vienna, to be graded the world's most secure city, according to Numbeo.

The index ranked 338 cities globally by estimating their overall safety levels.

UAE urges everyone “to contribute generously” to people affected by flood in Kerala

Vice President of UAE has formed a committee that will provide relief to people of Kerala, affected by severe flood.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of UAE, urged “everyone to contribute generously towards this initiative.”
