Kenyan government urges citizens not to mistreat foreigners due to COVID-19 outbreak

NAIROBI, March 2 (NNN-Xinhua/KBC) — The Kenyan government urged its citizens not to victimize foreigners in the country due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Mutahi Kagwe, cabinet secretary of the Ministry of Health, told journalists in Nairobi that there have been incidences where locals have been mistreating guests from other countries due to racial profiling.

China-built modern railway powering Kenya's modernization:expert

NAIROBI, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train service that marked 1,000 days of seamless operations on Tuesday has fueled Kenya's economic modernization, an expert has said.

Sammy Kwinga, a Nairobi-based political scientist said that Kenya's gross domestic product(GDP) and its attractiveness to investors has gone up since the launch of SGR commuter and freight services along the 480-kilometer Mombasa-Nairobi transport corridor.

Kenya's Safaricom to consider Huawei as supplier for 5G network

NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya’s biggest telecoms operator Safaricom (SCOM.NR) will consider awarding a contract to China’s Huawei as it rolls out its fifth generation (5G) network this year, its acting chief executive said on Wednesday.

The United States government has been urging its European allies and others not to use Huawei, one of Safaricom’s network vendors along with Nokia (NOKIA.HE), citing security concerns.

Kenyan army vows to sustain fight against al-Shabab after attack

NAIROBI, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan military on Sunday vowed to pursue al-Shabab terrorists after a foiled attack at its airstrip which its soldiers use along with U.S. forces in the coastal region of Lamu.

Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) spokesman Paul Njuguna also confirmed that five al-Shabab terrorists were killed in the 5:30 a.m. attack at Manda Airstrip in Lamu county in which the extremist group claimed responsibility.

Extremists attack Kenya military base, 3 Americans killed

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Al-Shabab extremists overran a key military base used by U.S. counterterror forces in Kenya before dawn Sunday, killing three American Department of Defense personnel and destroying several U.S. aircraft and vehicles before they were repelled, U.S. and Kenyan authorities said.

The attack on the Manda Bay Airfield was the al-Qaida-linked group’s first attack against U.S. forces in the East African country, and the military called the security situation “fluid” several hours after the assault.

Heavy Gunfire Reported As Suspected Al-Shabaab Militants Attack Military Bases In Lamu

LAMU, Kenya, Jan 5 (NNN-KBC) – Heavy gunfire reported, as suspected Al-Shabaab militants attack Camp Simba army bases, that host US & Kenya soldiers, in Lamu’s Manda Bay, Kenya.

Citizen TV, quoting police sources, report that, the the Somalia-based militant group ambushed the military camp in a daring attack, at a security installation within the country.

Reports indicate that the daring attack saw the armed militants employ the services of a suicide bomber.

Al-Shabab attacks base used by US, Kenyan troops in Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The al-Shabab extremist group attacked a military base used by U.S. and Kenyan troops in coastal Kenya early Sunday, with U.S. aircraft and vehicles destroyed, Kenyan authorities said. Kenya’s military said the pre-dawn breach was repulsed and at least four attackers were killed.

A plume of black smoke rose above the base near the Somali border. Residents said a car bomb had exploded.

Mayor says landslides kill at least 15 in Burundi’s capital

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — The mayor of Burundi’s capital says at least 15 people have been killed by landslides caused by heavy rains over the weekend.

Bujumbura Mayor Freddy Mbonimpa on Sunday evening said another 30 people were injured and dozens of homes were damaged or destroyed in the landslides earlier in the day in the north of the capital.

One 50-year-old survivor who gave her name only as Angele said she lost her four children and her husband when their house was destroyed. She said she was spared because she had been away at work.

West African Nations Rename Common Currency

NAIROBI, Dec 22 (NNN-KBC) – Eight West African countries will rename their common currency, CFA franc, to “Eco,” in what Cote d’Ivoire’s President, Alassane Ouattara, called a “historic” move.

Ouattara made his remarks at a press conference, in the country’s southern city of Abidjan, with French President, Emmanuel Macron, by his side.

The Eco will be pegged to the euro.

Kenya launches Chinese-built 50MW solar power plant

NAIROBI, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta launched a 50 MW solar power farm located in Garissa, northeast region, with the plant being one of the largest photovoltaic electricity stations in Africa.

The project was designed and built by the EPC contractor China Jiangxi Corporation for International Economic and Technical Co-operation (CJIC), in conjunction with Kenya's Rural Energy Authority (REA).
