MANDERA, Kenya, May 5 (Xinhua): Al-Shabab militants on Saturday night attacked a Kenyan village in the border town of Mandera and escaped with food and a gun, a police officer confirmed on Sunday.

The officer said the attack in Hareri Hosle, a village in Mandera Arabia road at the border of Kenya-Somalia started at around midnight when about 30 al-Shabab believed to have crossed from Somalia, roamed the village.

KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — More than 1,000 people have died from Ebola in eastern Congo since August, the country’s health minister said Friday as hostility toward health workers continues to hamper efforts to contain the second-deadliest outbreak of the virus.

Health Minister Oly Ilunga told The Associated Press that four deaths in the outbreak’s epicenter of Katwa helped push the death toll to 1,008. Two more deaths were reported in the city of Butembo.

3 May 2019; DW: Sudan's public prosecutor has ordered the interrogation of ousted President Omar al-Bashir on charges of "money laundering and financing terrorism."

Al-Bashir was removed from power and arrested by Sudan's military on April 11 after months of protest against his 30-year rule. The military and opposition leaders are now in the process of setting up a transitional government.

29 Apr 2019; AFP: Sudanese protesters Sunday welcomed a breakthrough in talks with army rulers who agreed to form a joint civilian-military council, paving the way for the civilian administration demanded by demonstrators.

Saturday's agreement would replace the existing 10-member military council that took power after the army ousted veteran leader Omar al-Bashir on April 11 amid massive protests.

29 Apr 2019; DW: An attack on a church in Burkina Faso killed at least five people on Sunday, local media reported. At least two other people were missing, according to a security source cited by the AFP news agency.

The pastor of the church was also killed in the raid, which targeted the Protestant congregation in the small northern town of Silgadji, some 200 kilometers (124 miles) away from the capital Ouagadougou.

HARARE, April 29 (Xinhua) -- An Air Zimbabwe plane caught a "brief tail pipe fire" mid-air on Sunday after suffering a malfunction on one of its engines, the airline said in a statement Monday.

"However, the malfunction did not threaten the continuation of the flight and safety of the crew and passengers on board and it landed safely in Harare at 2030hrs. Our engineers have commenced the requisite investigations and a report will be issued in due course," the airline said.

The Boeing 767-200ER servicing flight UM462 was flying from Johannesburg to Harare.

GABORONE, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Botswana has partnered with the World Bank to develop a renewable energy strategy that would allow the country to be more independent on energy supplies, said President Mokgweetsi Masisi on Saturday.

He made the remarks at an event of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party in the capital Gaborone.
