JAPAN: BOJ Kuroda says virus impact likely biggest topic at G20 meeting

TOKYO (Reuters) - The impact of the new coronavirus outbreak on global growth will be a key issue at this weekend’s meeting of G20 finance leaders, Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda said, underscoring growing concern over the fallout from the epidemic.

Kuroda said it was not yet time to discuss whether additional monetary easing was needed to prevent the virus outbreak from damaging Japan’s economic recovery.

South Korea ups emergency response as viral cases surge

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea reported more virus cases Friday and declared a “special management zone” around a southeastern city where the surging outbreak, largely linked to a church in Daegu, threatens to overwhelm the region’s health system.

In the capital, Seoul, officials banned major downtown rallies and shut down a big park to avoid mass public gatherings where the virus could spread. Workers in protective gear also sprayed disinfectant in the city’s subway.

Singapore confirms 3 new cases of Covid-19, discharges 34 cases

SINGAPORE, Feb 19 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Singapore’s Ministry of Health today confirmed three additional cases of COVID-19 in the republic, bringing the total number of positive cases to 84.

All three new cases are Singapore citizens with no recent travel history to China. One of them is a 54-year-old man who is linked to The Life Church and Missions Singapore church, and who travels frequently to Malaysia for work purposes.

Malaysia: An estimated savings of RM2.86 bln possible for Pan Borneo Highway – Minister

KUALA LUMPUR, 20 Feb (NNN-BERNAMA) —  An estimated savings of RM2.865 billion could be possible for the Pan Borneo Highway (PBH) Sarawak project based on the overall difference in the development cost between that of the Project Delivery Partner (PDP)’s model and a conventional method.

However, the final amount of savings can only be realised after a full evaluation is carried out in the future, Works Minister Baru Bian said.

The estimated savings took into account the development cost of RM21.857 billion including construction costs based on the PDP model.

China updates diagnosis and treatment plan for COVID-19

BEIJING, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- The National Health Commission (NHC) on Wednesday issued an updated version of the diagnosis and treatment plan for the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

The latest version of the plan abolished different epidemic-related standards inside and outside the epicenter of Hubei Province, and will only identify "suspected cases" and "confirmed cases" across the country.

South Korea city urges 2.5M to stay home as virus cases grow

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The mayor of the South Korean city of Daegu urged its 2.5 million people on Thursday to refrain from going outside as cases of a new virus spiked and he pleaded for help from the central government.

Mayor Kwon Young-jin made the request in a televised news conference after the southeastern city and its nearby towns reported 35 additional cases of infection with the new coronavirus on Thursday.

Coronavirus outbreak’s impact on economy temporary, short-term: China

BEIJING, Feb 19 (APP): China on Wednesday said that the impact of novel coronavirus epidemic was temporary and short-term since the government had sufficient policy space to boost the economy and long-term positive trend of the economy would not change.

“We are confident that we will achieve the goals and tasks set for economic and social development,” Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson Geng Shuang said during his regular online briefing held here.

Death toll from China virus surges past 2,000

Beijing, Feb 19 (PTI) The death toll from the coronavirus epidemic in China crossed the 2,000-mark on Wednesday with the death of 136 more people, while the overall confirmed cases climbed to 74,185, authorities said.

The National Health Commission said in its daily report that 2,004 people had died of the disease known as COVID-19. NHC said 1,749 new cases of novel coronavirus infection have been confirmed.

Uzbekistan’s Population Exceeds 34 Million

TASHKENT, Feb 19 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Uzbekistan’s population is now over 34 million, after increasing by 100,000, since the beginning of the year.

According to the country’s statistics committee, the population of men is roughly 17.10 million and women 16.90 million.

Uzbekistan is a former Soviet republic, with the biggest population in Central Asia.
