India: 8 killed as truck ploughs into roadside eatery in Bihar

Bihar Sharif, Mar 28 (PTI) Eight people were killed and several others seriously injured when a speeding truck ploughed into a roadside eatery in Bihar's Nalanda district on Sunday, police said.

Irate locals set fire to the vehicle and indulged in heavy stone-pelting when police and administrative officials reached the spot, a senior police officer said.

India: Tejashwi Yadav reaches Bihar assembly driving a tractor

Patna, Feb 22 (PTI) RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Monday drove a tractor to reach the Bihar assembly, in an expression of solidarity with those opposing the farm laws and protest against spiralling rise in prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas.

The leader of the opposition also flayed the Nitish Kumar government in the state for keeping mum on the issue of oil price rise and claimed that agriculturists in Bihar were often forced to sell their produce at rates less than half of the MSPs because of the abolition of APMCs.

India: Kanhaiya Kumar meets Nitish's key aide in Patna

Patna, Feb 15 (PTI) Many eyebrows were raised in Bihar on Monday as news broke of a meeting between CPI's rising star Kanhaiya Kumar and Ashok Choudhary, a minister and key aide of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

A fiery former JNU student leader, who has of late is being seen as veering towards Nitish Kumar despite their parties rarely getting on the same page on most issues, Kanhaiya met Choudhary on Sunday.

India: Case lodged in Patna court against Kangana Ranaut

Patna, Dec 18 (PTI) Actress Kangana Ranaut was on Friday accused of having tarnished the reputation of former Union minister Upendra Kushwaha, in a complaint lodged before a court here.

Shyam Bihari Singh, the legal cell head of the Rashtriya Lok Samata Party, headed by Kushwaha, filed the complaint against Ranaut before the court of CJM, Patna.

India: BJP's Vijay Sinha elected Speaker of Bihar assembly

Patna, Nov 25 (PTI) BJP MLA Vijay Kumar Sinha was on Wednesday elected as Speaker of the Bihar assembly by a majority vote.

Sinha, who was the candidate of the ruling NDA, got 126 votes as against 114 polled in favour of RJDs Awadh Bihari Chaudhary who was fielded by the opposition Grand Alliance.

The voting was marred by rumpus caused by opposition members who protested presence of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on the floor of the House on the ground that he was a member of the legislative council.

India: CBI opposes Lalu Prasad s bail in Dumka treasury case

Ranchi, Nov 24(PTI) The CBI on Tuesday submitted its written opposition to RJD chief Lalu Prasads bail plea in Jharkhand High Court in the fodder scam case related to Dumka treasury saying that he has not served a single days sentence in connection with it.

Lalu Prasad's lawyers claimed that he has completed half of his sentence in judicial custody in the case.

Prasad, the former Bihar chief minister, was sentenced on March 24, 2018 to 14-years rigorous imprisonment by CBI special judge Shivpal Singh in the Dumka treasury embezzlement case of fodder scam.

India: Three Naxal terrorists killed in Bihar encounter

Patna, Nov 22 (PTI) Three Maoists were killed in an encounter with security forces in Bihar's Gaya district on Sunday, officials said.

The encounter took place around midnight in the Barachatti forest area of the district, that is about 100 kms from the state capital here. The Maoists were killed in the early hours.

Three bodies of Naxals have been recovered from the encounter spot that includes zonal commander Alok Yadav, they said.

India: Nitish faces derisive comments by Tejashwi, Chirag

Patna, Nov 16 (PTI) Nitish Kumar, who was sworn-in as Bihar chief minister for the seventh time on Monday was greeted with derision by opposition RJD and the LJP for assuming office though his party, the JD(U) has secured far less number of seats than than its ally - the BJP.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav mocked Kumar calling him a nominated chief minister, while LJP chief Chirag Paswan said tongue-in-cheek that he hoped that the JD(U) president would "continue to be NDA's chief minister".

India: RJD to boycott Nitish's oath ceremony due to election "fraud"

Patna, Nov 16 (PTI) Bihars main opposition party RJD on Monday said it will boycott the oath-taking ceremony of Nitish Kumar as chief minister, claiming the mandate in the elections was "against the NDA" which has been changed by a "fraud".

Kumar is scheduled to take oath as chief minister for the seventh time in Raj Bhavan this evening.
