India: Record 64,399 new COVID cases; 861 deaths

New Delhi, Aug 9 (PTI) With a highest single-day spike of 64,399 cases, India's COVID-19 tally zoomed past 21 lakh (2.1 million) on Sunday, while the death toll climbed to 43,379 with 861 more fatalities, the Health Ministry said.

The number of recoveries surged to 14,80,884 with record 53,879 more people recuperating in the past 24 hours, taking recovery rate to 68.78 per cent,. The case fatality rate has dropped 2.01 per cent, according to the ministry data.

India records 61,537 new COVID-19 cases, 933 deaths in a day

New Delhi, Aug 8 (PTI) With India registering 61,537 more cases, the coronavirus tally reached 20,88,611 on Saturday, while 14,27,005 people have so far recuperated from COVID-19 pushing the recovery rate to 68.32 per cent, the Union health ministry said.

The death toll due to the disease rose to 42,518 with 933 fresh fatalities being reported in a day, data updated at 8 am showed.

India: One person arrested in 12-year-old's sexual assault case

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) The Delhi Police on Thursday arrested a 33-year-old man in connection with the sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl in Paschim Vihar area here, officials said.

The accused, Krishan, was identified on the basis of CCTV footage and has a criminal record, they said.

India: Girish Chandra Murmu appointed new CAG

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) The government on Thursday appointed Girish Chandra Murmu as the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India, a day after he resigned as the Lt Governor of Jammu and Kashmir.

Murmu will succeed Rajiv Mehrishi, a 1978-batch IAS officer of the Rajasthan cadre, who completes his term on August 7.

India: SC extends protection to TV anchor in defamation cases

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) The Supreme Court Thursday extended the protection from any coercive action till August 31 to TV news anchor Amish Devgan in connection with the cases lodged over his alleged defamatory remark against Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti during a show telecast on June 15.

A bench comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari took note of the fact that one of the FIRs against Devgan has been transferred from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh to Noida in Uttar Pradesh.

India: Over 56,000 COVID-19 cases in country in single day

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) India saw a single day increase of 56,282 COVID-19 cases taking the country's virus tally to 19,64,536, while the recoveries have surged to 13,28,336, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The death toll due to COVID-19 climbed to 40,699 with 904 new fatalities being reported in 24-hours, the data updated at 8 am showed.

There are 5,95,501 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country presently which contribute to 30.31 per cent of the total cases.

India: Transformation underway in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh: Jaishankar

New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) A transformation is underway in Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Wednesday on the first anniversary of the Centre's decision to revoke the special status of the region.

Taking to Twitter, Jaishankar highlighted application of progressive laws, delivery of social justice, empowerment and support for vulnerable sections and rolling out of development projects as part of the transformation.

India: 197 women qualify in civil services exam 2019

New Delhi, Aug 5 (PTI) As many as 197 women are among the 829 candidates who have qualified in the prestigious civil services examination 2019, officials said on Wednesday.

The number of successful women candidates is slightly more than in the 2018 civil services exam.

Of the total of 829 candidates selected for Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS), among other services through the civil services exam 2019, 632 are men and 197 women, the officials said.
