New Delhi, Sep 16 (PTI) Election 2019 will be an intense, high-stakes tussle for power like all others but with one difference in a first, it is likely to be as hotly contested in the virtual world as in the real one with parties already busy getting their social media warriors battle-ready.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi is Chief Justice of India

New Delhi, Sept 14; GANASHAKTI: JUSTICE RANJAN Gogoi, the most senior judge in the Supreme Court after Chief Justice Dipak Misra, was appointed as the next Chief Justice of India on Thursday.

“The President of India has appointed Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the next Chief Justice of India. He will assume the office of Chief Justice on October 3, 2018 after the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Justice Dipak Misra,” said a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Tariff negotiations with US underway: Steel Minister

New Delhi, Sep 14 (PTI) Steel Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh Friday said negotiations are underway with the United States (US) over 25 per cent tariff it had imposed on steel imports.

US President Donald Trump had earlier imposed a 25 per cent import tariff on steel and 10 per cent on aluminium.

However, the minister said there would not be any immediate impact on domestic steel exports as India sends a marginal amount of alloy of its shipment to the US.

Kumaraswamy accuses BJP of trying to topple his government

Bengaluru, Sep 14 (PTI) Accusing the BJP of attempting to topple his government,Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy Friday warned of legal action against "certain kingpins' who, he claimed, were trying to bribe Congress and JD(S) MLAs to pull down his ministry.

Amid media reports that certain resorts were ready to host some Congress and JD(S) MLAs in the alleged toppling game following internal dissent in the Congress, Kumaraswamy asserted he was ready to face any challenge to his government.

Cop's son arrested, charged with rape, intimidation

New Delhi, Sep 14 (PTI) A Delhi policeman's son, who is seen brutally thrashing a woman in a video that has gone viral, was arrested Friday after being charged with rape and criminal intimidation in two separate cases, police said here.

The arrest of Rohit Tomar, 21, took place hours after Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted that the video has come to his notice and he has directed Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to take necessary action in the matter.

Terror-funding: Court allows ED to quiz jailed business man Naval Kishore

New Delhi, Sep 11 (PTI) A Delhi court today allowed the Enforcement Directorate to quiz an UAE-based businessman arrested by the NIA in a terror-funding case involving Lashkar-e-Taiba chief and 26/11 Mumbai attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed.

District Judge Poonam A Bamba granted two days to the ED to quiz businessman Naval Kishore Kapoor, who is currently lodged at the Tihar Central Jail.

Media trial of caes can't be allowed; press needs to draw a line: SC

New Delhi, Sep 11 (PTI) The press should "draw a line" and strike a balance as media trial of cases cannot be allowed, the Supreme Court said Tuesday while hearing the Muzaffarpur shelter home case in which several women were allegedly raped and abused.

The apex court, which was dealing with a plea challenging a Patna High Court order restraining the media from reporting on the investigation into the Muzaffarpur shelter home case, said the issue was not "simple".

Indian SC extends house arrest of rights activists till Sep 17

New Delhi, Sep 12 (PTI) The Supreme Court Wednesday extended the house arrest of five rights activists who were arrested in connection with the Koregaon-Bhima violence case till September 17.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud adjourned the hearing on the plea filed by historian Romila Thapar and four others to September 17 after it was submitted that senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who is representing the petitioners, was busy in another court.

PM announces new cleanliness drive

New Delhi, Sep 12 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday announced the launch of the 'Swachhata Hi Seva Movement' from September 15 to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

In a video message, he called upon people to join the movement on Saturday morning.

"I look forward to interacting with those who have worked assiduously on the ground to strengthen the Swachh Bharat (Clean India) Mission after which swachhata (cleanliness) activities will begin," he said.

What’s taking so long to hang her daughter’s rapists and murderers

Nirbhaya’s mother has approached Delhi Mahila Ayog to enquire the reason for delay in hanging her daughter’s rapists and murderers.

Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi said that she wants justice for her daughter, which cannot be done until murderers are hanged.

According to Punjab Kesary, Asha Devi lodged a complaint with DCW in July, asking why it’s taking so long to execute the criminals as per the Spreme Court’s verdict in May 2017.
