JNU student leader Umar Khalid attacked in Delhi

New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) JNU student leader Umar Khalid was allegedly shot at by a man just at the Constitution Club here today, but he escaped unhurt, police said.

Khalid was at the venue to attend an event titled 'Khauff Se Azaadi', organised by an organisation named 'United Against Hate'.

Later Khalid said, "There is an atmosphere of fear in the country, and anybody who speaks against the government is threatened.

Delhi CM expresses fear BJP might stall CCTV camera project

New Delhi, Aug 11 (PTI) Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today expressed the fear that the BJP might stall their ambitious project to install CCTV cameras in the city, a day after the Delhi Cabinet approved a proposal for the scheme.

As per the plan, the Delhi government will install around 1.4 lakh CCTV cameras across the national capital.

When rapes, sexual abuse of women at shelter homes will stop, asks SC

New Delhi, Aug 10 (PTI) The Supreme Court today expressed serious concern over recent cases of rape and sexual abuse of women at shelter homes in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and asked when these horrific incidents would stop.

The apex court's observation came while hearing a matter relating to sexual abuse of children at orphanages.

Lynch map of India - Protesters condemn rising hate crimes

New Delhi, Aug 9 (PTI): A group of activists held a meet at the Jantar Mantar today, demanding justice for the victims of hate crimes.

They demanded immediate implementation of the July 17 Supreme Court directives to prevent vigilantism and compensation for victims of hate crime.

The activists also sought prosecution of political and public figures who through action or speech support vigilantism.

Supreme Court expresses concern over rape incidents in country

New Delhi, Aug 7; PTI:  The Supreme Court today expressed concern over incidents of rape in the country and said that women are being raped "left, right and centre".

A bench comprising Justices M B Lokur, Deepak Gupta and K M Joseph pulled up the Bihar government for funding an NGO which ran the shelter home in Muzaffarpur where girls were allegedly raped and sexually abused.

The bench referred to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data and said that  every six hours, a woman is raped in India.

SC judges meet CJI over Justice K M Joseph issue

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) Judges of the Supreme Court today met Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and lodged their protest over the Centre's decision to lower down the seniority of Justice K M Joseph, who is scheduled to take oath as apex court judge along with two others tomorrow.

Highly placed sources in the apex court said the judges, including Justices M B Lokur and Kurian Joseph, who are members of the collegium, met the CJI at the judges lounge during the tea before start of the day's working.

Adani Power net loss widens to Rs 825 cr in Apr-Jun qtr

New Delhi, Aug 6 (PTI) Adani Power today said its consolidated net loss widened by 82 per cent to Rs 825.15 crore in the quarter ended June 30, 2018.

The company's consolidated net loss stood at Rs 452.84 crore in the quarter ended June of the previous fiscal, a BSE filing said.

According to the statement, the company's total income in the quarter under review declined to Rs 3,959.40 crore from Rs 5,601.25 crore a year ago.

The company said that this reduction in income was due to lower PLFs and billed availability.

Don't get swayed away by infighting: CJI Misra to budding lawyers, judges

New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI) Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra today asked budding lawyers and judges not to get swayed away by infighting and distractions that come their way and suggested them to deal with such situations courageously.

He was addressing law students at the sixth convocation of the National Law University here.

"You are required to develop an attitude not to get swayed away by the infighting and distractions that come your way. Remain firm and courageous," CJI Misra told the students.

3 HC judges appointed as Supreme Court justices

New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI) Three high court judges were today appointed to the Supreme Court, taking the total number of judges in the apex court to 25.

Notifications announcing the appointments of Uttarakhand High Court Chief Justice KM Joseph, Madras HC Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Orissa HC Chief Justice Vineet Saran to the Supreme Court were issued today.

Their warrants of appointment were signed by the President last night.
