India's COVID-19 cases jump from 2 lakh to 3 lakh in 10 days as it records worst daily spike

New Delhi, Jun 13 (PTI) Ten days after recording two lakh COVID-19 cases, India surpassed the three lakh-mark on Saturday with the worst daily spike of 11,458 infections, while the death toll too climbed to 8,884 with 386 new fatalities, the Union Health Ministry said.

India took 64 days to cross the 1 lakh-mark from 100 cases, then in another fortnight it reached the grim milestone of two lakh cases. It has now become the fourth worst-hit nation by the pandemic with a caseload of 3,08,993, according to coronavirus statistics website Worldometer.

Malaysia reports 33 new COVID-19 cases, with 17 local transmissions

PUTRAJAYA, June 12 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Thirty-three new positive cases of COVID-19, including three local transmissions involving Malaysians, were reported today as Malaysia entered the third day of the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO), said Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

He said this brought the total number of positive cases to 8,402, with 1,115 being active cases with infectivity.

Covid-19: Global death toll passes 425,000

PARIS, June 13 (NNN-AGENCIE) — The coronavirus pandemic has killed 425,000 people since it emerged in China late last year, according to a tally of official sources at 0130 GMT on Saturday.

A total of 425,282 deaths have now been recorded from 7,632,517 cases.

Europe has registered 186,843 deaths from 2,363,538 cases, but the epidemic is progressing most rapidly in Latin America, where there have been a total of 76,343 deaths recorded from 1,569,938 cases.

Oman Reports 1,117 New COVID-19 Cases, 21,071 In Total

MUSCAT, June 13 (NNN-ONA) – The Omani Ministry of Health, announced on Friday, 1,117 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number in the country to 21,071.

According to a statement, issued by the ministry, all new cases, including 470 Omanis, are related to community contact.

The statement also said, 866 patients of COVID-19 have recovered, bringing the total recoveries to 7,489.

Seven new deaths were reported, bringing the death toll to 96.

India: HC asks North DMC to pay its resident doctors' salary

New Delhi, Jun 12 (PTI) The Delhi High Court Friday directed North Delhi Municipal Corporation (North-DMC) to pay by June 19 the salary for March to the resident doctors in its six hospitals, including Kasturba Gandhi and Hindu Rao.

A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan also asked the Delhi government to release funds to North DMC so that it can pay the April salary of the resident doctors of its hospitals by June 24.

India records over 10,000 COVID-19 cases in single day, tally nears 3 lakh

New Delhi, June 12 (PTI) For the first time since the COVID-19 outbreak, India recorded over 10,000 new cases in a day taking the tally to 2,97,535, while the death toll rose to 8,498 with a record single-day spike of 396 fatalities, according to the Union Health Ministry data.

The country has registered 10,956 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours till Friday 8 am.

India on Thursday went past the United Kingdom to become the fourth worst-hit nation by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Worldometer.

170 police officers die of coronavirus in Peru

LIMA, June 12 (NNN-AGENCIES) — At least 170 police officers in Peru have died after contracting the coronavirus while enforcing the South American nation’s pandemic lockdown, the interior minister said.

Almost 10,000 officers have been infected with the disease as they enforced social distancing measures during Peru’s 12 weeks of stay-at-home orders.

“We have 9,900 infected personnel and 170 deceased personnel. That is the figure that we currently have despite the efforts being made,” Interior Minister General Gaston Rodriguez told reporters.

Chile’s cases climb past 154,000 in 100 days

SANTIAGO, June 12 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Chile on Thursday exceeded 154,000 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus and 2,600 deaths, one hundred days after the outbreak began and with the health service straining under massive admissions numbers.

“It has been a very hard 100 days,” health minister Jaime Manalich told reporters in the capital Santiago. “June is going to be the toughest month in the fight against the disease.”

Health authorities reported 154,092 cases and 2,648 deaths so far.

Brazil deaths top 40,000, 1.5m cases in Latin America

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 12 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Brazil has surpassed 40,000 deaths from the novel coronavirus and 800,000 cases, according to the latest figures from the health ministry.

The news came as the number of Latin American cases of the virus broke through the 1.5 million barrier, according to a count based on official figures in the region.

Latin America has also reported more than 73,600 deaths.
