India: 14 jail staff in Aurangabad contract COVID-19

Aurangabad, Jun 10 (PTI) As many as 14 staff members of the Harsul jail in Maharashtra's Aurangabad district tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday, a prison official said.

Earlier, 29 undertrial prisoners of the jail had tested positive for the disease following which samples of the prison's administration staff were sent for testing.

Reports of 14 jail staff members, including two officers, came out positive on Wednesday, a senior prison official said.

Delhi Police SI dies due to COVID-19

New Delhi, Jun 9 (PTI) A 59-year-old sub-inspector of Delhi Police died on Tuesday due to coronavirus, officials said.

Earlier, one constables and two assistant sub-inspectors of Delhi police had died due to COVID-19.

Another constable, who had underlying health conditions and had been on leave since November last year, also died last week. Police said his test for COVID-19 also came positive.

The sub-inspector who died on Tuesday has been identified as Karambeer. He was posted in northeast district, they said.

India: Two IPS trainees test positive for COVID-19

Hyderabad, June 9 (PTI): Two IPS trainees have tested positive for COVID-19 and been quarantined at the city-based Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), a premier training institute of the country for the Indian Police Service officers, an official said on Tuesday.

The two were among the 131 IPS probationers of 71 Regular Recruits (RR) 2018 batch, who returned from District Practical Training (DPT), to the Academy.

India: Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal tests negative for COVID-19

New Delhi, Jun 9 (PTI) Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has tested negative for COVID-19, an official said on Tuesday.

The official said that the 51-year-old AAP supremo underwent the test for the novel coronavirus on Tuesday morning.

"The chief minister has tested negative for COVID-19," the official said.

Asked whether he would undergo a test again after some days, the official said, "There is no need for it."

Kejriwal had gone into self-quarantine on Sunday after he developed a sore throat and fever.

India: AIIMS nurses body calls off strike

New Delhi, Jun 9 (PTI) The AIIMS Nurses' Union called off their nine-day protest over poor working conditions amid the COVID-19 crisis on Tuesday, stating that the administration has agreed to most of their demands.

Several healthcare workers at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have been infected by the disease with around 50 of them being nursing staff, sources said.

India: COVID-19 cases in Delhi cross 31,000-mark

New Delhi, Jun 10 (PTI) COVID-19 cases in the national capital breached the 31,000 mark on Tuesday with 1,366 fresh cases, while the death toll mounted to 905, according to the Delhi government's latest health bulletin.

The bulletin issued on Wednesday said there are 18,543 active cases, while 11,861 patients have either recovered, been discharged or migrated.

No health bulletin was issued on Tuesday.

According to the health bulletin, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Delhi rose to 31,309 with 1,366 fresh cases.

UK COVID-19 Deaths Rise To 40,883, As Another 286 Patients Die

LONDON, June 10 (NNN-AGENCIES) – Another 286 COVID-19 patients died in Britain as of Monday afternoon, bringing the total death toll in the country to 40,883, the British Department of Health and Social Care said Tuesday.

The figures include deaths in all settings, including hospitals, care homes and the wider community.

As of Monday morning, 289,140 people have tested positive in Britain, a daily increase of 1,387, according to the department.

Peru’s COVID-19 Cases Top 200,000

LIMA, June 10 (NNN-ANDINA) – The number of COVID-19 cases in Peru surpassed 200,000 on Tuesday, less than a month after the virus caseload topped 100,000 in the country.

A total of 1,227,691 tests for the virus have been carried out so far, with 203,736 positive cases, the health ministry said, in its latest report.

The South American country registered 5,738 deaths from the disease, representing the third highest death toll in Latin America and the Caribbean, after Brazil and Mexico.

Brunei Reports No New COVID-19 Cases For 33 Straight Days

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, June 10 (NNN-BB NEWS) – Brunei reported no new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, with the national tally of cases standing at 141, marking the 33rd consecutive day without new cases, since May 7.

In relation to the contacts of the cases found to be positive in Malaysia, laboratory tests for COVID-19 on 134 contacts of the cases are found to be negative, while others are still pending test results.

The ministry of health says, 120 individuals are currently undergoing quarantine and a total of 2,703 individuals have completed their quarantine.

Lockdowns in 11 European countries may have prevented over 3 mln deaths: study

LONDON, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Large-scale lockdowns and other non-pharmaceutical intervention in 11 European countries may have helped avert approximately 3.1 million deaths as the measures successfully curbed the novel coronavirus transmission, according to a new study released by the Imperial College London.

From March 2 to 29, European countries began implementing major non-pharmaceutical methods, such as school closures and national lockdowns, to control the COVID-19 pandemic.
