Indian firefighters battle air pollution in New Delhi

NEW DELHI (AP) — Indian authorities have ordered firefighters in the capital to sprinkle water from high-rise buildings to settle dust and stop garbage fires and have banned construction activity as hazardous air quality affects millions of people.

New Delhi recorded one of the highest pollution levels of the year on Sunday with the air quality index, measuring sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, touching 450.

Indian Navy commissions INHS Sandhani

Mumbai, Dec 24 (PTI) The Indian Navy Monday commissioned INHS Sandhani, its tenth Naval hospital, at the Naval station Karanja in Uran near Mumbai.

Preeti Luthra, President of NWWA (Navy Wives Welfare Association), Western Region, unveiled the commissioning plaque of the hospital.

The Commissioning Warrant was read by the first Commanding Officer of the hospital Surgeon Captain HBS Chaudhry, the Navy said in a release.

Improvement in Ganga water quality far cry

KANPUR: Though Sisamau Nullah with a cost of 63 crore rupees has been tapped, the Ganges' biological water quality is yet not improved in every respect. It stays nearly on the same assessment which was done during the year 2014-15 and the year 2015-16 respectively.

This glaring fact has surfaced following a recent report presented by the Central Pollution Control Board. The analysis is in compliance with the apex court’s order.

India: Dengue cases rise to 4,704 as year nears end

New Delhi, Dec 17 (PTI) Dengue cases in Delhi have mounted to 4,704 this year even with the onset of winter when conditions become unfavourable for the breeding of mosquito larvae, a municipal report said Monday.

At least four people, including a minor boy, have died in the city due to the vector-borne disease this year till December second week.

Three of the victims were identified by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) as Aman Tiwari (13), Sanskriti (21) and Gagan (23).

California is first state to mandate zero-emission bus fleet

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California moved Friday to eliminate climate-changing fossil fuels from its fleet of 12,000 transit buses, enacting a first-in-the-nation mandate that will vastly increase the number of electric buses on the road.

The California Air Resources Board voted unanimously to require that all new buses be carbon-free by 2029. Environmental advocates project that the last buses emitting greenhouse gases will be phased out by 2040.

Patients expose flaws at Ursula before DM

KANPUR: Despite the divisional commissioner’s ultimatum at the city’s second big government Ursula Hospital for correcting the irregularities, nothing useful was available to the district magistrate during his visit on December 13.

It was most unexpected, almost shocking for him. From November 27, 2018 inspection by the divisional commissioner to the district magistrate’s ire at the persisting poor position at the hospital was worth understandable.

Heart attack risk highest on Christmas Eve, study says

Swedish scientists have found that people are most at risk of suffering a heart attack on December 24, often observed as Christmas Eve, than any other day during the holiday season, said a study published on Wednesday in the medical journal BMJ.

India: TB patients increased to 18.62 lakh in 2018

New Delhi, Dec 12 (PTI) The number of tuberculosis patients in the country has risen to 18.62 lakh in 2018 till November from 18.27 lakh a year ago, the Rajya Sabha was told.

The increase of 15,000 patients is due to initiatives like expansion of repaid diagnostics and engaging with the patients seeking care in the private sector and community engagement, Minister of State for Health Ashwini Kumar Choubey said in a written reply in the House Tuesday.

India: Over 16000 runners take part in Pune Half Marathon

Pune, Dec 9 (PTI) Marathon enthusiasts from around the country congregated in the city to run in the maiden edition of Bajaj Allianz Pune Half Marathon (PHM), which saw participation from over 16,000 people from various walks of life.

The participants ran across three race categories: The Half Marathon (21 km), The 10 km Run and The Family Run (6 km).
