India: Ashok Tanwar resigns from Congress

New Delhi, Oct 5 (PTI) In a blow to Congress ahead of Haryana Assembly polls, its former state unit chief Ashok Tanwar resigned from the primary membership of the party on Saturday.

Tanwar announced his resignation on Twitter and posted a four-page resignation letter addressed to Congress president Sonia Gandhi in which he said "Congress is going through existential crises, not because of its political opponents but because of serious internal contradiction.

India: Cong releases fourth list of candidates for Maha polls

New Delhi, Oct 3 (PTI) The Congress on Thursday named 17 more candidates for the Maharashtra assembly elections, taking to 140 the total number of party nominees it has announced for the elections to the 288-member assembly.

Among the new names in the fourth list released by the party is Sushil Amrutrao Rane from Kankavli after its MLA from there Nitesh Rane joined the BJP.

The Congress also replaced two of its candidates.

Elections in Maharashtra will be held on October 21 and results will be out on October 24.

Total 155 nominations filed in UP for assembly bypolls

Lucknow, Sep 30 (PTI) A total of 155 nominations have been filed for the Uttar Pradesh bypolls, voting for which will be held on October 21, the Election Commission said on Monday.

Of the 155 nominations filed so far for the 11 assembly seats going to by-election in the state, 121 were filed on Monday -- the last day of filing the papers.

India: AIMIM declares 7 more candidates for Maharashtra polls

Aurangabad, Sep 30 (PTI) The All India Majalis-e- Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) on Monday announced another list of seven candidates for the October 21 Maharashtra assembly polls, taking the total till now to 24.

The latest list was released by state AIMIM president and Member of Parliament Imtiyaz Jaleel.

The Hyderabad-based party had earlier ended its alliance with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), led by Dalit leader Prakash Ambedkar.

India: EC functioning like an "agent of BJP", says Cong

Bengaluru, Sep 27 (PTI) The Congress in Karnataka on Friday said the Election Commission was functioning like an "agent of BJP" and termed its move to defer bypolls to 15 assembly segments in the State till the Supreme Court decides on the case of disqualified Congress-JD(S) legislators as "arbitrary."

In the country's history,this is the first time the Election Commission (EC) has cancelled elections after issuing notification without giving any reason, the party claimed.

Indian bypolls: BJP wins 2 seats; Left, Cong bag one each

New Delhi, Sep 27 (PTI) The BJP on Friday emerged victorious in two of the four assembly constituencies where bypolls were held while the ruling LDF wrested a seat in Kerala and the Congress consolidated its position in Chhattisgarh, winning Naxal-affected Dantewada.

BJP candidates won in Uttar Pradesh and Tripura defeating their Samajwadi Party and CPI-M rivals respectively.

LDF's Mani C Kappen defeated Jose Tom Pulikkunnel of the opposition Congress-led UDF in a closely-contested fight.

India: Ruling LDF wins Pala bypoll in Kerala

Kottayam (Ker), Sept 27; GANASHAKTI: The ruling CPI(M)-led LDF in Kerala on Friday won the by-election to Pala assembly constituency, wresting the seat from the opposition Congress led UDF.

LDF candidate Mani C Kappen defeated Jose Tom Pulikkunnel of the opposition Congress-led UDF in a closely contested  fight.

Kappen, leader of the Nationalist Congress Party, defeated Pulikkunnel, a faction leader of the Kerala Congress (M) by 2,943 votes.

India: Cong, NCP to contest 125 seats each in Assembly polls: Pawar

Mumbai, Sep 16 (PTI) The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress will contest 125 seats each in next month's Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election, NCP chief Sharad Pawar said on Monday.

Pawar announced that the seat-sharing pact between the grand old party and his 20-year-old organisation has been finalised.

As per the arrangement, 38 seats will be left for allies to contest, he tweeted. Maharashtra Assembly has 288 seats.

India: BJP has offered Sena 106 seats in Maharashtra

Mumbai, Sep 12 (PTI) The BJP has offered 106 seats to its main alliance partner Shiv Sena for the next month's Maharashtra Assembly polls, but the latter is not likely to accept less than 120 seats, a source said on Thursday.

The seat-sharing talks between the two parties are likely to conclude in a day or two, a BJP source said here.

The Assembly has a total of 288 seats. Last time the two parties had fought the elections separately.
