India: PM Modi has natural temper for science: Jitendra Singh

New Delhi, Jan 21 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a natural temper for science and under his leadership the government has taken various initiatives for the development of science and technology, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said on Tuesday.

Inaugurating India's first global Mega Science Exhibition 'Vigyan Samagam' at the National Science Centre here, Singh said three-tier teams should be set up for scientific research involving older and younger generations so that continuity can be maintained in research work.

Kanpur: Correction in faulty electricity bill at the power sub-station level is difficult for honest consumers. One week is not a long time for the officials entertaining the bills for revision. The consumers only run but the result remains inadequate. 

The meter reader does not mind in preparing the wrong bill for he is supposed to annoy the consumers. The reader has got a habit of issuing a bloated bill as the amount is paid by the hapless consumer.

India: HC relief to suspended DIG accused of molestation

Mumbai, Jan 22 (PTI) The Bombay High Court on Wednesday granted interim protection from arrest to suspended Maharashtra deputy inspector general of police Nishikant More, who is accused of molesting a 17-year-old girl.

Justice P D Naik directed More to appear before Taloja police in Navi Mumbai on January 29, 30 and 31 to cooperate with the probe in the case.

India: Mamata leads anti-CAA march in Darjeeling hills

Darjeeling (WB), Jan 22 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday led a 4-km-long protest march in Darjeeling hills against the new citizenship law.

The rally began at Bhanu Bhakta Bhavan near Mall in Darjeeling and will conclude in the Chowkbazar area.

Earlier, she had led ten protest marches and six rallies in various parts of the state against the CAA and the proposed nationwide National Register of Citizens (NRC).

India: 1,029 candidates filed 1,528 nominations for Delhi polls

New Delhi, Jan 22 (PTI) As many as 1,029 candidates have filed 1,528 nominations for the Delhi Assembly polls on February 8, according to data shared by the poll panel.

On the last day of filing nominations on Tuesday, over 800 nominations were filed for the 70 assembly constituencies, which go to polls on February 8.

As many as 1,029 candidates, including 187 women, have filed a total of 1,528 nominations, an official from the office of Delhi chief electoral officer said.

India's top court gives government more time to explain divisive citizenship law

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India’s Supreme Court declined calls to suspend the implementation of a new citizenship law on Wednesday, deciding that a constitutional bench of five judges was needed to hear all the challenges to legislation that critics say discriminates against Muslims.

The court gave Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government four weeks to respond to 144 petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the law which has ignited protests across the country.

India's economic growth estimated 4.8% by IMF, Chidambaram thinks it's lower

New Delhi, Jan 21 (PTI) With the IMF lowering India's economic growth estimate for the current fiscal to 4.8 per cent, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Tuesday claimed an attack on the world body and its chief economist Gita Gopinath by government ministers was imminent.

He also alleged that the growth figure of 4.8 per cent given by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is after some "window dressing" and he won't be surprised if it goes even lower.

India: Man get life sentense for sexually assaulting minor girl

Coimbatore, Jan 20 (PTI) A court here on Monday sentenced a 27-year-old man to life imprisonment for sexually abusing a minor girl two years ago.

The prosecution case was that Sathish Kumar, hailing from a village near Gobichettipalayam in Erode district, had abducted the 16-year-old girl in February, 2017, took her to a lonely place and sexually assaulted her as the girl had rejected his love proposal.

India: TDP chief, 17 MLAs taken in police custody

Amaravati, Jan 20 (PTI) Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu and at least 17 MLAs of his party were taken in police custody late on Monday as they tried to conduct a foot march from the state assembly to nearby Mandadam village in violation of prohibitory orders.

TDP leaders started off on the march after staging a sit-in near the assembly main entrance following the suspension of 17 MLAs from the House for the day.

India: Woman IPS officer assaulted, molested by AR rifleman in Manipur

Imphal, Jan 21 (PTI) A woman IPS officer has alleged that a rifleman of Assam Rifles physically assaulted and molested her at a check post near Moreh town in Manipur's Tengnoupal district, police said on Tuesday.

Based on a written complaint of the IPS officer, an FIR has been registered against rifleman P K Pandey and a summons has been issued to him to appear before the police station concerned, the police said.

Manipur DGP L M Khaute told reporters on Monday, "We have contacted the Assam Rifles authorities. A complaint has been lodged by the officer."
