India: Onion price soars to Rs 120 a kg in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Dec 4 (PTI) Amid the onion prices soaring to Rs 120 a kg in open markets of the state, the Odisha government on Wednesday sought to provide succour to people, saying the cost of the pungent vegetable bulb is likely to decline by January first week after production of new crop.

While the onion price in open market was around Rs 90 a kilogram on Tuesday, it registered an overnight jump by Rs 30 in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

India: JNU students decide to boycott exams

New Delhi, Dec 5 (PTI) Jawaharlal Nehru University students have decided to boycott exams in protest over the hostel fee hike, according to a resolution adopted by the representatives of various schools and centres of the varsity.

A general body meeting was held on Wednesday among the students' representatives of various schools and centres and it decided on Thursday morning to boycott all academic activities.

The students have been demanding a complete rollback of the fee hike.

India: RBI keeps benchmark interest rate unchanged at 5.15%

Mumbai, Dec 5 (PTI) The Reserve Bank of India on Thursday kept the key policy rate unchanged at 5.15 per cent and decided to continue with its accommodative stance to support the economy.

The central bank also revised GDP growth downwards to 5 per cent for 2019-20 from 6.1 per cent projected in its October policy.

India: Girl raped by hotel staffer in Jaipur

Jaipur, Dec 5 (PTI) A 19-year old girl was allegedly raped by a staffer of a hotel where she was undergoing training for hotel management course in Jaipur, police said on Thursday.

The victim, a resident of Mumbai, lodged an FIR with the Kho Nagorian police station on Wednesday alleging that the accused, Akshya, raped her near the hotel on Friday night.

India: Five arrested for setting on fire UP rape survivor

Lucknow, Dec 5 (PTI) Five men have been arrested for allegedly setting on fire a woman, who was raped a year ago in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district, police said on Thursday.

The woman, who is battling for life in a Lucknow hospital, had named five men, including two of the accused who are out on bail, police said.

India: Chidambaram in Rajya Sabha after release

New Delhi, Dec 5 (PTI) Congress leader P Chidambaram, who has been released from Tihar Jail on bail after 106 days in custody in the INX Media money-laundering case, was present in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Chidambaram, who walked out of jail on Wednesday night, joined other Congress MPs voicing their protest against the steep hike in onion prices and said he was happy to be back.

India: Man hacks father to death

Mangaluru (Karnataka), Dec 5 (PTI) A 65-year-old man was hacked to death by his son in Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada district, police said on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Krishna Naik from Bollimbala in Panaje village.

Police said Naik was fed up with his 28-year-old son Udaya not showing any interest in getting a job for himself and had frequent quarrels over it.

On Wednesday, after a heated argument, Udaya hacked his father with a machete and he died on the spot, police said.

Udaya has been arrested,they added.

India: Citizenship Bill to be introduced in Lok Sabha on Monday

New Delhi, Dec 5 (PTI) The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is likely to be introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 9 and will be taken up for passage the next day, official sources said on Thursday.

The bill, which seeks to grant citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan if they faced religious persecution there, will be tabled in the Rajya Sabha after being dealt with by the Lower House of Parliament.

India: Muslim party seeks review of Ayodhya verdict, says Babri be rebuilt for justice

New Delhi, Dec 2 (PTI) A plea seeking review of the verdict which cleared the way for construction of a Ram Temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya was filed in the Supreme Court on Monday stating that "complete justice" could only be done by directing reconstruction of Babri Masjid.

A 5-judge bench, headed by the then Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, had in a unanimous verdict on November 9 decreed the entire 2.77 acre disputed land in favour of deity 'Ram Lalla' and also directed the Centre to allot a 5-acre plot to Sunni Waqf Board for building a mosque in Ayodhya.
