India to launch its first solar mission on Sept. 2

NEW DELHI, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Monday formally announced that it would launch "Aditya-L1", the first space-based Indian observatory to study the Sun, on Sept. 2 from the Satish Dhawan Space Center located in Sriharikota of India's southern state of Andhra Pradesh, off the Bay of Bengal.

"The Aditya-L1 will be the first Indian space-based observatory-class solar mission to unlock the mysteries of the Sun," added the ISRO.

Modi says India as G20 host will be inclusive and invites African Union to become permanent members

NEW DELHI (AP) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the country’s role as the G20 host this year would focus on highlighting the concerns of the developing world, and has proposed the African Union to become permanent members of the forum.

“We have a vision of inclusiveness and with that vision, we have invited the African Union to become permanent members of the G20,” Modi said on Sunday as he addressed the Business 20 Summit in New Delhi.

Buildings collapse in India's landslide, no deaths reported

NEW DELHI, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- There were no deaths reported in Thursday's massive landslide in India's northern hilly state of Himachal Pradesh, confirmed a senior state government official.

Several buildings collapsed in the massive landslide, and a few more buildings in the vicinity have also been declared unsafe, said Ashwini Kumar, Additional District Magistrate of Anni town, Kullu district in the state.

BENGALURU, Aug 21 (Reuters) - India's space agency on Monday released images its spacecraft took of the far side of the moon as it headed for an attempted landing on the lunar south pole, just days after the failure of a Russian lander.

The Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft had been in a race with Russia to be the first to land on the lunar south pole, a region whose shadowed craters are thought to contain water ice that could support a future moon settlement.

Bus mishap kills 7 in north India

NEW DELHI, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people died and 28 were injured when a bus carrying around 35 passengers fell into a deep gorge in India's northern hilly state of Uttarakhand on Sunday, confirmed a local cop.

The accident took place on the Gangotri National Highway near Gangnani area, when the bus was moving from Gangotri to Uttarkashi area.

The injured were admitted to a local hospital, said a senior state government official.

Air India unveils new logo in rebranding push under Tata Group

NEW DELHI/BENGALURU, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Tata Group on Thursday unveiled a new logo, branding and plane livery for Air India as part of a multi-million dollar transformation of the former state-run carrier.

The airline's new logo includes a design with golden, red and purple colours, and will replace the old logo of a red swan with orange spokes.

The rebranding by Tata, which comes after years of under-investment under government control, will not completely do away with the iconic mascot of a cheerful Maharaja in a red turban and with an outsized moustache.

Indian opposition parties' no-confidence motion against federal gov't defeated

NEW DELHI, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The no-confidence motion brought by the opposition parties in India against the federal government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was defeated by a voice vote in the Indian parliament's lower house on Thursday.

The debate over the no-confidence motion lasted for three days after it was introduced by a lawmaker belonging to the main opposition party, the Indian National Congress (INC), on Tuesday.
