India: Father Stan Swamy deserved justice, humaneness: Rahul

New Delhi, Jul 5 (PTI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed condolences on Monday over the death of Father Stan Swamy and said he deserved justice and humaneness.

"Heartfelt condolences on the passing of Father Stan Swamy. He deserved justice and humaneness," he wrote on Twitter.

Jesuit priest Stan Swamy, an accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, died at a Mumbai hospital on Monday afternoon.

India: TMC to protest against fuel price hike on July 10,11

Kolkata, Jul 5 (PTI) The Trinamool Congress will stage protests across West Bengal on July 10 and 11 against the spiralling fuel prices and the alleged lack of response towards the issue by the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, senior party leader Partha Chatterjee said Monday.

TMC activists and supporters will hold sit-ins in all district towns and blocks from 10 am to 4 pm on July 10 and 11, Chatterjee told reporters at the party headquarters here.

Swamy, a Jesuit priest, who spent long years working among his beloved Advasis in this eastern Indian tribal state, died on Monday in Mumbai, hours before his appeal for bail in a case where he is ironically accused of being an `Urban Naxal' was to be heard.

India: Woman killed for dowry in UP's Muzaffarnagar

Muzaffarnagar (UP), Jul 6 (PTI) A woman was found hanging at her in-laws' house in a village of the Khatoli area here, with her family alleging that she was killed over dowry, police said on Tuesday.

Police have booked Shital's husband Vishal, father-in-law Vikram Singh and three others in the case.

According to police, the incident took place at Dahod village on Monday and the victim' family alleged that she was being harassed for dowry by her in-laws, who were demanding a car and other things.

India: Human rights activist Stan Swamy dies in custody awaiting medical bail

Mumbai, Jul 5 (PTI) Jesuit priest Stan Swamy, an accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, died on Monday while waiting for an interim bail on medical grounds.

Dr Ian D'souza, director of the Mumbai-based Holy Family Hospital, the private facility where Swamy was undergoing treatment, and the activist's lawyer Mihir Desai informed a bench of the Bombay High Court of his death following cardiac arrest.

New Delhi, Jul 5 (PTI) India's technology platform for COVID vaccination - CoWin -is being made open source and soon it will be available to all countries, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday, asserting that India has been committed to sharing its expertise and resources with the global community in combating the pandemic.

Addressing the CoWIN Global Conclave via video conference, Modi said experience shows that no nation, no matter how powerful, can solve a challenge like this pandemic in isolation.

India: Roadways driver uses insight to stop bus with faulty brake

Kanpur: The brake of a roadways bus ceased to function in night hours suddenly at Jajmau here on Sunday. No reports of a big loss was reported owing to lesser number of people around the crossing. 

Although a big accident was avoided yet the claims of the maintenance of the roadways buses has been exposed.

The bus was laden with a few passengers at the time of occurrence of the brake failure, a major defect, at Ramadevi crossing in the Jajmau area here.

Srinagar, Jul 5 (PTI) The People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) on Monday said assembly elections should be held only after restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and asked the BJP-led central government to honour its commitment made on the floor of Parliament.

India's services sector activities slump at fastest rate in 11 months in June

New Delhi, Jul 5 (PTI) India's services sector activities contracted further in June as the intensification of the COVID-19 crisis and reintroduction of containment measures restricted demand, a monthly survey said on Monday.

The seasonally adjusted India Services Business Activity Index fell from 46.4 in May to 41.2 in June, as new work intakes and output contracted at the fastest rates since July 2020, which prompted companies to reduce employment again.
