India: Woman raped in UP's Shahjahanpur

Shahjahanpur (UP), Mar 25 (PTI) A 35-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a man in this district of Uttar Pradesh, police said on Thursday.

The woman, whose husband works in Delhi, was alone at her house on Tuesday night when the 50-year-old accused barged in and allegedly raped her, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Sanjeev Bajpai said.

The woman later informed the police about the incident and a case was registered against the accused, the SP added.

India: Over 53,000 new COVID-19 cases in a day, highest this year

New Delhi, Mar 25 (PTI) India added over one lakh coronavirus infections in just two days with 53,476 new cases in a span of 24 hours, the highest single day rise so far this year, pushing the nationwide COVID-19 tally of cases to 1,17,87,534, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.

The active caseload registered an increase for the 15th day in row and was recorded at 3,95,192 comprising 3.35 per cent of the total infections, while the recovery rate has further dropped to 95.28 per cent, the data stated.

India Sees COVID-19 Surge With Over 47,000 Daily Cases, 275 Deaths

NEW DELHI, Mar 24 (NNN-PTI) – India’s COVID tally reached 11,734,058 today, as 47,262 new cases were reported from across the country, according to the latest figures released by the federal health ministry.

Besides, 275 deaths since yesterday morning, took the death toll to 160,441. Both the number of new cases and deaths recorded in the past 24 hours are the highest this year, so far.

There are still 368,457 active cases in the country, while 11,205,160 people have been discharged from hospitals after medical treatment.

India: Two arrested for killing woman over dowry in UP

Ballia (UP), Mar 24 (PTI) Two people were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly killing a woman for dowry in Uttar Pradesh's Revati area, police said.

The body of Rekha (22) was found hanging from the ceiling of her room on Tuesday, said SHO, Revti, Yadvendra Pandey.

An FIR was registered against the victim's husband Bhola Sahni, brother-in-law Sonu and his wife Chunni Devi based on a complaint by Rekha's father Durga Chowdhury, he said.

New Delhi, Mar 23 (PTI) The Congress on Tuesday alleged that economic inequality in the society has been increasing under the NDA government, a charge refuted by the BJP, which said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been sincerely working for the welfare of the poor.

Initiating the debate on the Finance Bill, 2021, Congress member Amar Singh said the economic situation in the country is deteriorating and charged that 73 per cent of the country's wealth is going to just 1 per cent of the population.

India: Time to frame CAA rules extended by Parliament

New Delhi, Mar 23 (PTI) The government has been granted time till April 9 by Lok Sabha and July 9 by Rajya Sabha to frame rules under the citizenship law.

Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said in Lok Sabha that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) was notified on December 12, 2019 and came into force from January 10, 2020.

The Committees on Subordinate Legislation, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha have granted time up to April 9 and July 9 respectively to frame these rules, he said in a written reply.

Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 23 (PTI): Kerala's tuberculosis eradication programme has won national honour as the state bagged the Union government's award for reducing the prevalence of the disease through various systematic initiatives.

Kerala is the lone state which has been chosen for the recognition in the state category, a Health department statement said here.

India: Vaccine for all above 45 years from April 1

New Delhi, Mar 23 (PTI) The government Tuesday announced that from April 1, all people above 45 years of age will be eligible to get COVID-19 vaccines and requested them to get registered for the inoculation.

Briefing reporters on the decisions taken by the Cabinet after its meeting, Union minster Prakash Javadekar said now even people without comorbidities who are more that 45 years of age can get vaccinated.

He requested people entitled to get themselves registered to take the jabs.
