India: Democracy murdered in Bihar: Congress

New Delhi, Mar 24 (PTI) The Congress on Wednesday alleged that democracy has been murdered in Bihar after opposition legislators were allegedly roughed up by the police inside the state assembly.

The Bihar Assembly witnessed unprecedented turmoil on Tuesday and the police was called in to physically evict legislators who had laid siege to the Speakers chamber.

Members of the opposition Grand Alliance, comprising RJD, Congress and the Left, were agitated over the Bihar Special Armed Police Bill, 2021.

India: Lockdown proved inflection point for e-commerce

New Delhi, Mar 24 (PTI) The pandemic-induced lockdown and movement curbs marked an inflection point for e-commerce in India, pushing demand to record highs, nudging new buyers as well as sellers onto digital platforms, and holding out the promise of lasting growth for players.

The Indian e-commerce market has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the pandemic, as containment measures introduced millions to the convenience of online shopping, and prompted seasoned online shoppers to buy more.

India: Kerala HC junks pleas of 3 BJP candidates' nomination rejection

Kochi, Mar 22 (PTI) In a setback to the BJP-NDA front ahead of the April 6 assembly polls, the Kerala High Court on Monday dismissed pleas of its three candidates challenging the rejection of their nomination papers by returning officers.

Justice N Nagaresh accepted the contention of the Election Commission that the court cannot interfere once the notification for the polls has been issued.

India: SC to hear pleas seeking action against NRI husbands deserting wives

New Delhi, Mar 22 (PTI) The Supreme Court Monday said it would hear in July the pleas seeking mandatory arrest of NRI husbands for deserting their wives and harassing them for dowry.

A bench of Chief Justice Bobde and Justices AS Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian was told by senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, appearing for the petitioner group of women, that pleading has been completed in the matter and he is ready to argue the case.

The bench said it is listing the matter for July.

Delhi lowers legal age of drinking to 21 years

New Delhi, Mar 22 (PTI) The Delhi Cabinet on Monday approved a new excise policy lowering the minimum age for consumption of liquor to 21 years from 25 years, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced.

According to the new policy, no new liquor shops will be opened in Delhi and the government will not run any vend.

India: Man arrested in Haryana for raping Class 10 girl

Ambala, Mar 22 (PTI) The police have arrested a man for allegedly raping a student of Class 10 here, officials said on Monday.

The girl, who studies at a local school, used to visit the man's house for tuition, they said, adding that the accused was arrested on Sunday.

The accused lived near the girl's house, officials said.

When the girl complained to her parents about stomach pain, she was taken to the civil hospital here and during her medical check up, it was revealed that she was one-month pregnant, police said.

India: Mathura court requested to reject plea against mosque

Mathura, Mar 22 (PTI) A Muslim body on Monday requested a Mathura court to reject the plea seeking the removal of a mosque near a temple which the devouts believe marks the birthplace of Lord Krishna.

The plea seeking the removal of the 17th century Shahi Idgah mosque from the 13.37-acre premises of the Katra Keshav Dev temple was filed by advocate Mahendra Pratap Singh and four others.

India: 67th National Film Awards: winners list

New Delhi, Mar 22 (PTI) Filmmaker Priyadarshan's "Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham" was named the best film, while Bollywood actors Kangana Ranaut, Manoj Bajpayee and Dhanush were declared best actors at the 67th National Film Awards, announced here on Monday.

While Ranaut won the best actress award for her performances in "Manikarnika" and "Panga", Bajpayee was named best actor for Devashish Makhija's "Bhonsle". The actor shared the honour with Dhanush, who earned the honour for "Asuran".

India: Mehbooba doesn't appear before ED in money laundering case

New Delhi, Mar 22 (PTI) PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Monday did not appear before the Enforcement Directorate at its headquarters here in a money laundering case, citing that she had prior commitments that could not be cancelled.

However, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said she is ready and willing to be questioned in Srinagar, preferably at her residence or through video conference.

India-Pakistan detente continues with water-sharing talks

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India and Pakistan are to hold the first meeting in three years on Tuesday of a commission on water rights from the Indus River in a further sign of rapprochement in relations frozen since 2019 during disputes over Kashmir.

The Permanent Indus Commission, set up in 1960, will meet for two days in New Delhi, according to two Indian officials involved with water issues and Pakistan’s foreign ministry.
