India: BJP MLA tests positive for coronavirus in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, May 28 (PTI) A BJP MLA in Gujarat tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday and was admitted to a private hospital.

His condition was stable, said state BJP spokesperson Bharat Pandya.

Congress MLA Imran Khedawala took a jibe at the MLA for not opting for government-run hospitals.

Did the BJP legislator not trust the state government's claim that government hospitals were providing the best treatment, he asked.

India: Temple looted in Palghar; priests attacked

Palghar, May 29 (PTI) Three unidentified assailants allegedly attacked two priests and looted a temple at Balivali in Maharashtra's Palghar district, an incident which came more than a month after the lynching of two sadhus in a village near here, police said on Friday.

The incident took place at around 12.30 am on Thursday when three armed men barged into Jagrut Mahadev Mandir and Ashram at Balivali under Vasai taluka, an official said.

India: Teenaged girl raped by 3 in UP

Muzaffarnagar, May 29 (PTI) A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by three men who also recorded a video of the act at Bhohrahedi village under Bhopa police station in the district, police said Friday.

SHO Sanjive Kumar said the police registered a case against three men who were on the run and added that the girl was sent for medical examination.

India: Sonu Sood airlifts 177 Odia girls from Kerala

Mumbai, May 29 (PTI) Actor Sonu Sood on Friday came to the rescue of 117 girls as he helped them reach home in Odisha.

The actor airlifted the girls who were stuck in Kerala due to the nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus.

According to a source close to the actor, Sood was informed about the group of girls by a close friend from Bhubaneswar and he decided to help them.

India's coronavirus death toll overtakes that of China

New Delhi, May 29 (PTI) India's coronavirus death toll has surpassed that of China after it reported a total of 4,706 fatalities, while it overtook Turkey to become the ninth worst-hit nation by the pandemic with 1,65,799 COVID-19 cases.

The country has registered 175 deaths and a record 7,466 fresh coronavirus infection cases in the last 24 hrs till Friday 8 am, according to the Union Health Ministry.

India: Forex reserves soar to record high of USD 490.04 bn

Mumbai, May 29 (PTI) The country's foreign exchange reserves swelled by USD 3.005 billion to a lifetime high of USD 490.044 billion in the week to May 22, mainly on account of a rise in foreign currency assets, RBI data showed on Friday.

In the previous week, the reserves had increased by USD 1.726 billion to USD 487.04 billion.

Foreign currency assets (FCA), a major component of the overall reserves, increased by USD 3.035 billion to USD 451.706 billion in the reporting week, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data showed.

India: Mamata announces relaxations from June 1

Kolkata, May 29 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a series of relaxations from June on Friday while claiming that the number of coronavirus cases is increasing in the state due to the massive influx of migrant workers.

She announced that religious places can open up from June 1 and allowed full attendance at public and private offices.

India: Fiscal deficit widens to 4.6 pc of GDP in 2019-20

New Delhi, May 29 (PTI) The country's fiscal deficit widened to 4.6 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product in 2019-20 mainly on account of poor revenue realisation, according to official data.

The deficit, which signifies the gap between government revenue and expenditure, is higher than the revised estimate of 3.8 per cent for the fiscal.

According to the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) data, the fiscal deficit for 2019-20 worked out to be 4.59 per cent of the GDP, while the revenue deficit was 3.27 per cent.

India: Case against SP leader Abu Azmi, others over protest

Mumbai, May 29 (PTI) A case was registered on Friday against Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi and 45 others for violating lockdown norms during a protest in the city, a police official said.

Azmi, president of the Maharashtra unit of the Samajwadi Party, had had a heated argument with senior police inspector of Nagpada police station Shalini Sharma in the early hours of Thursday.

He had alleged that inspector Sharma misbehaved with him.

Delhi's COVID death toll jumps to 82 in last 24 hours

New Delhi, May 29 (PTI) Delhi's COVID-19 death tally has jumped by 82 in the last 24 hours, due to inclusion of 69 deaths that were reported late, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said on Friday.

He said 13 deaths occurred on Friday while the remaining 69 took place in the last 34 days and were reported late.

The total deaths due to COVID-19 in Delhi has mounted to 398 so far, Health Minister Satyendra Jain said.
